Re: Linux: Tricks of the Trade -- tips from our members

Kernel Newbies has always been a useful site to me:
http://kernelnewbies.org/

I wouldn't necessarily say its for virgin linux users but there is some great info in there about the kernel.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I have tried to create something of a comprehensive list to see why people abandon Linux......? I wish I could abandon Linux. But I'm stuck with it and I can't afford to buy a new OS. I'd love to love Linux. I hate Microsoft and Apple's market dominance. I'm all for free, open-source computing. Alt...

Re: Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead

30000 Packages in the Repos and I still have to run windoze in a Vbox to do accounting for my business. Some one really needs to make an accounting app that is compatible with Linux. We want something simple like Quick Books, MYOB, Peachtree, etc. And we want to be able to install it from package m...

Re: Mint 11 upgrade feature

If you go LMDE,, then you will automatically get newer versions of Mint, including whatever new features Mint 11 brings forth...It comes to you....no re-install or upgrading that might break your system, necessary... :) I was running lmde originally before going to Arch. As I said its not an issue ...

Re: when did Linux become mainstream?

I agree that the closest linux has gotten to being mainstream probably is android even thou most people don't realise its even linux. You could possibly make the argument that it started with the car navigation devices which used linux as a base.

Would like alternate kernal suggestions

Ok so i've been using linux for a little while now (a couple years straight this time around) and want to dive a bit deeper. I've been looking for a good kernel to use with my laptop. I've found a few such as the pentium m kernel i was using in arch http://www.zen-kernel.org/ . Im looking for one th...

Re: Firefox 4.0

Execute these commands in terminal: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0 And you are having Firefox 4.0 on Mint 10. I would like to point out that the packages from that repository are generally deemed unstable, its called minefie...

Re: If Linux Mint disappeared tomorrow, what would you use?

I guess technically if mint wasn't around tomorrow it would still be relevant for a little while and can still be used. But to answer the question if there were no more mint I would 100% certainly go straight back to Arch Linux

Re: Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead

I love the security of Linux but this is 2011 and software and hardware are evolving, FAST. Yes but so is the kernel, I am seeing more and more hardware being supported everyday. I have an old ati radeon card in my laptop, when i started using linux the performance was poor, but lately i've been re...

Re: Can't get certain media/videos to work in Firefox or Chr

I found this bug report that basically says that it wont load with desktop effects turned on, it was for the 64bit version of flash but may effect you as well. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/479672 in the meantime if you get it sorted out make sure to mark the post solved so ...

Re: Can't get certain media/videos to work in Firefox or Chr

Do embedded youtube videos work? The ones on sites out side of youtube? Is the video just not loading? You may be effected by a little bug that hit me and a few others. The fix seems to be clearing all cache (ALL browser cache including browsing history and such) just go to edit > preferences > priv...

Re: Keep your wallpapers Open Source!

Yes, I think so. What really matters isn't the format itself here, it's to be able to modify the artwork by accessing individual layers. For instance, say somebody makes a brilliant wallpaper for Mint 10... and comes Mint 11 we want to modify it and transform that 10 into an 11... that's when we ne...

Re: Mint 11 upgrade feature

The Mint devs strongly discourage upgrades between releases (even though it's simple enough to edit your sources.list to point to the new release's repos and run a dist-upgrade...I don't see the point of having an upgrade from CD option, really), so I doubt there will be any sort of official upgrad...
