Newbie question about coding in C

Not a bash question, so if there is a more appropriate forum please feel free to move. I've started working through the, "C for Dummies" book in an attempt to learn C. I copied some code in which kicks an error out because of a library that's not there. #include <iostream> produces: fatal error: ios...

Re: I want to dual boot Win 7 and Linux, is Mint right for m

Wine is a Windows environment that allows you to run certain Windows programs in Linux. I have played with Wine a bit and sometimes it works just as expected, other time not so much. My main reason last year to switch from Windows to Linux was to get away from Windows so I'm not a big Wine fan. If I...

Re: I want to dual boot Win 7 and Linux, is Mint right for m

Welcome Gridlost, I think you will find Mint to be a bit easier out of the box than Ubuntu. Mint has Java and the Flash plugin pre-installed whereas Ubuntu does not. Think of Mint as a supped up user friendly version of Ubuntu. As far as the 2G HDD, you will need 4G just to install Mint and that's a...

Re: Is Google Chrome falling behind?

No, I use Chrome because I like it. Was using it when I found the PeaceKeeper benchmarks. I was just wondering what is happening to Chrome, curious as to why it is scoring so low. I do or did like the fact that it was a quantifiably better browser based on some hard evidence. Now that I have conside...

Is Google Chrome falling behind?

I’ve been a Chrome user for some time now. With customers that used IE or Firefox I used to run the benchmarks at PeaceKeeper. Typically if IE scored 1000, Firefox would score 3000. Then I would install Google Chrome and run the benchmarks again. Normally Chrome would just about double the Firefox s...

Re: Canon Pixma MP 250 (and other) drivers - download

Thanks Tux Six months ago I bought a Canon MP-250 printer and spent hour trying to find the right drivers. I gave up on it and used the printer with my wife's Window$ laptop. This week end she upgraded to a Lexmark wireless so I had the Canon back. Today I decided to try again, your post was the sec...

Re: SSD sata question

Thanks again, was looking at the Patriot Torqx 2 (SATA II) but the OCZ Vertex 2 (SATA II) seems a bit of a better drive.

The OCZ is pushing the SATA II specs, read of 280MB/s and write of 270MB/s
My SATA HDD is reading at 60MB/s, 4.5 times faster sounds great.

How long does it take you to boot?

Re: SSD sata question

Thanks Vincent for the information. Was able to determine that the original equipment HDD was sata II and that the drives that are in it are also sata II. Thanks also for the link for drive info. While I was shopping for the SSD is when I noticed the wide difference in transfer speed, that's why I w...

SSD sata question

I'm considering buying an SSD to increase my boot time.

I have sata HDDs installed now, but I'm not sure if the are sata I, sata II, or sata III

I don't want to by a fast SSD if the speed is going to be throttled by the bus.

How can I determine the speed of my sata bus?

Re: Customising Gnome 3

Great article Oscar, Gnome 3 is very customizable, but it is not done easily yet. One command that I did not see in the article but was able to find exploring gsettings was desktop icons. They are turned off by default, here is the command to turn them on: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background ...

Installed Gnome 3 in Mint 11 over the week end. Absolutely love it after getting over hating it for a few hours.
Can't imagine going back to the old Gnome.

Mint 11 updates

This isn't a problem per say, just want to know something about Mint update. I just installed Mint 11 and updated using Mint Update. Then open a terminal and used sudo apt-get update && sudo dist-upgrade which is how I would normally update. These additional files were to be added using the terminal...
