Cannot login as root on Olivia

When I attempt to login as root, I have set the Login Window > Security > allow local administrator (Checked), I get the message about cannot load/start Ubuntu session. I have to say this, I have Debian Wheezy installed using the same Home directory and it all works, no problems. Just this one thing...

Cinnamon starting when not installed

OK, call me crazy, but I removed what I thought was all references to Cinnamon via Synaptic and terminal in my HOME folder. However, when I login the .xsession-errors file still reports that Cinnamon started as follows: ** (nemo:4008): WARNING **: Can not determine workarea, guessing at layout JS LO...

Re: hddtemp - no /dev/sda

I know you will think I am out of my mind, gone bananas, berserk or whatever, but I decided to reboot and see what the /dev/sd? was and it was /dev/sda. I rebooted and now everything is back to normal. Could someone explain what the heck happened, cause I am totally confused. I mean if Nadia was on ...

I did some more research and /dev/disk/by-uuid reports the following 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 May 21 18:15 2285786051060999 -> ../../sdd1 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 May 21 18:15 4C6613D16613BAA2 -> ../../sdb2 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 May 21 18:15 8d9e760e-479b-46b1-9328-3e2d8559b1ea -> ../../...

hddtemp - no /dev/sda

I have a conky script that reports disk temp's. Well I noticed that it was displaying temps. I had Debian 7 installed (before I borked it): In .conky Disk temp: ${alignr}${exec hddtemp -u f /dev/sda | cut -d':' -f3} ${alignr}${exec hddtemp /dev/sda | cut -d':' -f3} and nothing is displayed except th...

Re: XFCE Keeps Changing The Default Browser

I know this an old post, but, I had the same problem with running Nightly.
You have to Edit Preferences and go to Attachments and scroll down to http and https and click the down arrow and choose there.

Re: start-up screen

If you are referring to the Grub timeout you can edit /etc/default/grub and on line 9 is the

GRUB_TIMEOUT=30 (I believe the default is 5)

Change it to 0
then

update-grub

Re: Desktop font colour

You might try this; Open up gedit, medit, pluma or whatever your editor is and paste this into it # File created by KDE Gtk Config # Configs for GTK2 programs include "/usr/share/themes/greybird/xfce-notify-4.0/gtkrc" style "user-font" { font_name="FreeSans" } widget_class "*" style "user-font" gtk-...

Xfce looking like Gnome 2 ?

I have Nadia Xfce installed and customized it to mimic Gnome 2 as much as I could. Gnome 3 was ok, but not totally to my liking. Cinnamon had some weird quirks and Mate, well, it was ok as well. I installed Xfce and now my desktop is how I want it. Customized the themes, made it the way I want it. H...

Re: trouble on boot. need help!!!!!!!!!!

I know it has been a long time since you posted but I was looking for my issue and came across yours. You might try this. Open up Synaptic Package Manager and install BUM (Boot Up Manager) and then when you run that command enter password, of course, and check to see if LightDM is checked. If not, c...

Re: KDE vs GTK appearance

Thanks for the quick reply, but fonts weren't the issue, it was 'gui' part that was not right. For example, if you edit a gtkrc of any theme and mess up a line, say in the way you choose a color like "#c0c0c0c" That is a bad color, so when the theme is loaded you get an ugly gui. That's what was occ...

Re: KDE vs GTK appearance

Thanks for the reply and it was kind of disconcerting that no one replied but I understand why. Just a freaky thing. Yes, synaptic package manager is the one that is strange. Synsaptic, I have no idea what the heck that command is, by name anyway, but brings up the Synaptic Package manager. I have s...

KDE vs GTK appearance

I have for the most part solved all the odd issues in appearance, but, there is one area that befuddles me completely. If I, from the Run command, enter synsaptic (no idea what the heck that is but works) the appearance is fine. Now if I enter synaptic, a terminal window opens, shrinks down as in th...

Orphan packages in Synaptic

My warning to all ! Do not use/create the Orphan filter. I did and ran it and my system was hosed. Managed to recreate everything due to doing backups but now, I am back to the dang 'IPP tag cannot be edited' again. Still trying to resolve it and will persevere. Again if you do run the Orphan filter...

[SOLVED]/etc/rc.local not running at boot

I was reading up on the cgroup implementation. Here I thought is was for speed up only (about a year or so ago I read about this speedup thingy) and are they still required?
