Re: Who is using Debian STABLE?

I have my backup setup (I dual-boot) as Debian Stable, and have since Lenny came out of testing. You are confusing the application software with the software codecs. You will have to enable deb http://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/ squeeze main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/u...

Re: Display Resolution Changed

The official Ubuntu documentation is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution/ I also like the xrandr demonstration at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-change-display-resolution-settings-using-xrandr.html which includes information on setting your default resolution permanently. /etc/X11/xorg.con...

Re: apt-get upgrade vs. apt-get dist-upgrade

One thing not mentioned about

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
is that on the main-line Mint distribution, if the new version of Mint is out, even if it isn't for your version of the desktop, you will be upgraded if you use dist-upgrade.

Re: Wine / Mono doesnt launch any exe?

I can see I am rapidly getting in over my head, but . . . Are you trying to run the .exe files by simply clicking on them with the GUI, or are you using something like $ mono toolfile.exe at a terminal prompt? You might also want to go to the terminal and enter $ man mono for the manual on running M...

Re: Wine / Mono doesnt launch any exe?

It depends. How cutting edge is your C# code? The Mono project is not very active lately, from what I hear. The more Windows dependent the C# code, the less likely you will be able to make it run. If it will run on both Mac & Windows, it might be able to run under Mono. I am not a C# developer and d...

Re: wmv playback

You may have a corrupted file, a bad download, or it may be trying to install malware for Windows which doesn't work really well under Linux.

No, it is not normal. Have you tried using VLC or ffmpeg to translate the .wmv file to another format?

Re: Wine / Mono doesnt launch any exe?

As a general rule, Windows tools don't work well in WINE. If you have the C# source, you may be able to re-compile to run under Mono.

Re: LMDE is really hard to love

I am one of those who have been avoiding Unity and/or GNOME shell and thus changed over to LMDE first, then LMDE Xfce. I could have stuck with Xubuntu, but I wanted the (semi-)rolling release promise. My reason for avoiding Unity and GNOME for at least a while is that with my graphics setup, Compiz ...

Re: Install alongside other Linux Distros??

@Carlos, every one has to make choices. Linux is a choice, and we have more freedom of choice than Windows users, but with that freedom of choice means we must make those choices. No, you can't share root partitions between distributions. The applications are sharing libraries which you are not look...

Re: Is LMDE just a repackaged version of the Debian OS?

LMDE is a repackaged Debian Linux, just as Ubuntu and Simply MEPIS are both repackaged versions of Debian Linux. That is what a distribution consists of: What choices are made by the packagers and maintainers of the distribution. Linux Mint 13 is more directly derived from Ubuntu than from Debian an...

Linux Mint is derived from Ubuntu Linux, with basically the same device drivers, and just some user interface changes. Does that answer your question?

Re: addressing USB ports

The USB ports are designed to support 'intelligent' serial access devices for Plug-'n-Play operation. You are not supposed to be able to see the USB port with a device connected, just the device. This is true of Windows, Linux, and OS X. If you are truly trying to get down to connecting serial devic...

Re: Virtual Box Help

Did you save all of your Virtual Box folder, or just the .vdi file? The 'recommended' procedure is to fire up VirtualBox, select NEW machine, then select Use an Existing Hard Drive and point to the saved .vdi file to finish creating your 'new' VirtualBox machine. Many of the settings and drivers are...

Re: Mint 13 update-grub problem

From your error message, I would think the most likely problem is that you did not use a program editor to edit the /etc/default/grub file. Normally, you should use vim, nano, or gedit to edit the /etc/default/grub file by going into a terminal and typing, for example gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub ...

Re: need help with shisen-sho game

I am not familiar with the version in Mint 11, but there are alternative versions available. Xshisen only requires the X system to work, which is the basic video terminal. PysolFC runs on python and requires python-tk, but otherwise has minimal system requirements and has Shisen-sho as one of the op...

From your screenshot, your copy of Mint4Win and your ISO file versions do not match: Mint4Win is looking for Mint 12 and your ISO version is Mint 13.

Re: LMDE is really hard to love

Might I suggest a change of DE while waiting for the experiments in GNOME 3 and Unity to subside? Xfce is supported as an official LMDE alternative desktop and has been relatively stable and gaining in configure-ability. KDE is not supported officially, but also stable now that most of the changeove...

Have you considered:

b) Using the snapshot capabilities of btrfs?

Re: sudo and root account

That really depends on your definition of complete. :)

According to my reading of the documentation, not removing the username from the SUDO group means that username can still use anyone other than root's privileges.
