Re: Hard drive partitions

If LMDE is going to be the only operating system installed on the drive, you can normally go with the installation defaults. That said, what LMDE's default behaviour is to set up 2 partitions: / which is bootable, containing the file system which you are used to seeing, either ext3 or ext4, and a sw...

Re: LMDE installed on two HD

The problem is with Gparted, not LMDE. I haven't tried it, but Gparted has a drive selector in the upper right which should allow you to change drives after you have set up / and swap on drive 1 to switch to drive 2 and try to set /home on that drive. I am assuming drive 1 is a small SSD and drive 2...

Re: repair grub after win7 reinstall

I see a potential problem not covered by the article, responses, or responses here. Windows Vista and Win7 both install a separate partition boot loader partition and competitor to GRUB/LILO. When Windows is installed first, this Vista boot partition is installed as the first partition (or modifies ...

Re: LMDE has stopped working

^ LMDE doesn't have and will ignore an xorg.conf so I'd imagine the first step would generate an error. Reconfiguring the xserver won't do alot as X is already working. Next thing I would try is to purge and reinstall gdm Ctrl-alt-f1 sudo apt-get remove --purge gdm3 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get...

Re: Unable to login to sites when connected to a proxy

@bensoliman, Do you have any add-ons in Firefox which block execution of Javascript from the sites? Have you tried Chromium browser to see if it has the same problems? Since Windows has no problems, it is likely a browser setting and/or add-on problem which is keeping you from keeping the proper coo...

Have you checked the MD5SUM on both DVDs or run the disk self-check?

Re: LMDE has stopped working

Of course the other alternative to save your data from the Live CD is to copy to a thumb drive or external hard drive.

If you had more than one operating system, you could probably get your data from the other operating system and store it in that operating system's data area.

You should never try to run a GUI program using sudo. Doing so can and will, over time, break your desktop in multiple seemingly random ways. Use gksu or kdesu instead of sudo for GUI programs run as root.

Re: Linux Mint Debian

When I need root access for a series of commands, I simply open a terminal and type sudo bash then enter the CLI commands, for example, you might want/need to change file permissions/ownership on files moved from another machine or use apt-get/aptitude for updates. You could also use update-manager ...

Re: Unable to login to sites when connected to a proxy

I think your problem is with Internet cookies stored on your computer. If you disable cookies entirely, without allowing exceptions for those sites which use them to carry your login information from page to page, you get this effect. Check your Firefox browser settings.

Re: Drive One - Win7 / Drive Two - Mint

Just in case there is a problem with jumpers or something else which causes your blank drive to not be sensed properly, here are a couple things to check: 1) Check that your BIOS is set up and senses both drives, then 2) Disconnect power and data cables from the Windows 7 drive, leaving the blank dr...

Re: LMDE gdm background

OK, I'm fixed. I went the long way around the barn to fix it, but it worked this time when I logged in. What I did was install xdm, reboot and log in with xdm, ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 then chose gdm3 and rebooted. This time the Mint background was there. I just report it, I can't explain it.

One other potential gotcha: When you are talking about sharing data directories, you don't mean sharing /home/[username] directories do you? You should not share the configuration files between any, I repeat any, two distributions/versions.

Re: Difference between Live CD and installed LMDE ?

One reason why you can't mount the 20G file system is that it is marked 'not partitioned' in Disk Utility. If it is partitioned, it will be formatted, so any data in that area will be erased, but it will be able to be mounted. Look at this post for your squashfs questions: http://forums.linuxmint.co...

Re: Adding Windows to Grub

@euthypro The comments to the article you linked to finally explained why I have been having problems from the beginning with my Windows XP install: the manufacturer's (eMachines) restore disks use PC Angel software which writes to the same area GRUB uses. That is probably also why I couldn't use VM...

Re: Adding Windows to Grub

Maybe they have fixed GRUB since I used it last, but with Windows XP or the Windows Vista boot loader, GRUB normally installs in the MBR and (if installed correctly) points to the Windows installation. My Windows XP install (not OEM, an eMachines restore disk installation) has failed to boot after a...

Re: Think tis is an easy boot qstn (at bottom) but am giving

There are 3 versions of the Super GRUB disk: one for GRUB Legacy (GRUB 1), one for GRUB 2 (actually something like GRUB 1.9x), and Rescatux. see (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/). I actually have GRUB1 and GRUB2 versions in my tool box for that very reason. SuperGRUB2, like SuperGRUB1, will actually a...

[SOLVED]LMDE gdm background

Somehow in the process of doing updates, I lost my Mint background to the login screen. Before I go off the deep end, I should say that I have been using a custom xorg.conf file as below: # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@b...

Re: Linux Mint Debian

I would like to add, I submitted a bug[Bug 658680] because when I set up a separate /home partition ( /, /home, and swap), I lost my /home partition on a quad-boot system when I performed the standard updates to my system after installing LMDE.
