Re: Headphone jack not functioning

One last check you may want to do: Check to see if the headphone jack you are using has been disabled in your BIOS/EFI.

Re: Need latest tips for troubleshooting suspend plz.

If you have an SSD on your laptop, you might consider just shutting down the laptop instead of just closing the lid. Going into and staying in suspend is dependent on your laptop lid staying CLOSED, which evidently is not happening in your 'bag'. You might also consider getting a bag which fits your...

Re: making old hardware "snappy" for web browsing

Also look at alternative browsers, unless you are wedded to the functionality of Chrome/Chromium or Firefox. Midori, QupZilla, Arora, and Dillo will be blazing fast on your hardware, but may not have some functions you want.

Re: looking for tools

does there exist a similar linux tool to hashmyfiles? this was my fave win tool but drag & drop does not work under wine. There are md5sum, sha1sum, sha256sum, and sha512sum from the command line, which allow you to type in unique parts of the file name, then use Tab completion to finish the rest o...

Re: Accessing Windows phone from LM 17.3

For those following this thread who haven't done their searching: In the repositories: libmtp9 1.1.6-20, libmtp-doc, libmtp-common, libmtp-runtime, mtp-tools (all match version of libmtp9, gtmp 1.3.4-2, jmtpfs 0.5-1 GVfs Gnome Virtual file system, sometimes works better than the repository to access...

Hopefully your experiment worked.
There is a thread at Ask Ubuntu which may give you some other things to try. Remember, Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04. http://askubuntu.com/questions/392719/3 ... ot-support

Re: Monitor loses power after grub start

You have not described any of your hardware, other than to say it is a computer made by Dell. Please post the output of inxi -G cat /etc/grub/default and list the native resolution of your display. I am guessing that GRUB is setting the resolution of your monitor to a setting which is out of range f...

Re: 17.3 and touchscreen tablet

You need the proper drivers for your touch screen for the actions you are complaining about to work properly. They are evidently not available in the stock Mint 17.3 kernel. You can use your search engine to see if anyone has written the proper drivers to work with your machine, and/or you can try u...

Re: Accessing Windows phone from LM 17.3

This might be a duplicate of http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=187151 . The solution outlined there is to install the packages gvfs-backends and mtp-tools, as outlined in the following terminal code, to make sure that those packages are installed: sudo apt update && sudo apt-get insta...

Re: Installing to External HDD Partition on Macbook

1. Should I create the Mint partition myself (boot/data/swap) or leave the space unpartitioned and let the Mint installation do it for me? I would probably allow Mint to do it for you at your level of experience. OS X uses GPT partitions, just as EFI Windows (like Win8/Win10) do. 2. When I do the i...

Re: Chromium: Search search engines directly in URL field.

I would not necessarily trust that any search in the URL field does not go to the default search engine for Chromium before it goes to a third party search engine. After you have changed your default search engine, then I might trust that it should not be sent on.

Re: Linux Mint on Acer Aspire ES1531

Actually, the license key is NOT hard coded. It is in the Windows Registry and or on the Windows restore partition. It can also be on any Windows restore disk which you create, but earlier versions of Windows had to have you know your Windows license key to reactivate Windows.

When you try to log in by simply typing your password at the black screen with no visual feedback, what is the response? Will it log in? If not, what happens if you hit the 3 key combination Ctrl-Alt-F3? If you do not have a kernel panic, you should switch to a full-screen console. Ctrl-Alt-F7 shoul...

Re: 32-bit UEFI

One problem you might run into is AFAIK, the Linux Kernel does not support 32-bit UEFI. The 64-bit UEFI has been worked out, but 32-bit requires BIOS support, not EFI support. At least as far as I know. I do know that drivers for that type of support are not part of the Mint project but part of the ...

Re: which version suits my old samsung netbook?

According to the Samsung specifications for your netbook, you have 1G RAM, Intel GMA 3150 graphics with shared memory, and a 250G HDD. With these specifications, you can probably install and run any Mint or Ubuntu flavor with fair success. If your screen resolution is 1024x768 or greater, you should...
