Re: Can't Access Extra Storage Drives

Since your external drive is USB and Linux formatted, what are the outputs of these two commands?:

Code: Select all

lsusb
sudo fdisk -l

Re: Laptop hang on shutdown (reboot: power off)

I'm not sure which logs to look into, either. Usually when shutdown -P now fails, it is because a process is not shutting down properly. I have had similar problems in the past, but it was usually fixed soon by an upgrade.

Re: Can't Access Extra Storage Drives

How are the external drives formatted: ExFAT, FAT32, NTFS or something different? How are they connected? Internal PATA, Internal SATA, USB, eSATA, or something different? Do they have a separate power source, or are they powered from your machine? Is your machine a desktop or a laptop, what manufac...

Re: How did you learn to program?

Believe it or not, old fart that I am, my introduction to programming in college in the late '70s, was on FORTRAN IV on a CDC6600 main-frame using punch cards. My second course was a hardware course on the Intel 8080 processor using a cross-assembler hosted on a DEC PDP-11/70 running the AT&T UNIX o...

Re: HELP - access problems with removable hard drive

There are some places in the hierarchy which are just plain unpredictable, such as the /temp folder and any swap file or partition and contents of which you probably should never back up except if the system using it is shutdown entirely. Yes you could use another system on its own partition to back...

Re: alternatives to /home?

No, an additional folder under /usr/local would not violate any provisions of licensing, nor should it cause any problems with the system. It should simply be ignored except by those programs seeking that folder. You would have to change the owner of that directory to your user account if you wish t...

Re: USB/External drives not recognised

Have you set up the Huawei wireless access point? If not, there is a tutorial here: http://www.randombugs.com/linux/install-vodafone-mobile-connect-linux.html If you have an improperly configured USB device connected, ie. your wireless access point, a printer, etc., that can block even good USB devi...

Re: Wine crashes on almost every app

Have you used the recommendations on https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25607 for Adobe Photoshop CS6? Or checked the ratings given by https://www.winehq.org ? There is an open bug reported on your DOA5LR game for WINE after version 1.7.24 Read the reports on WINEhq before...

Re: CUPS not available, no listening on 631, reset, reinstal

-First, disconnect the cable between the computer and printer. -Second, turn the printer off for at least 60 seconds. -Third, then turn on the printer without re-connecting. If it attempts to print, see if you can reset the printer according to the printer instructions. If the printer won't reset wi...

Re: dnsmasq: Resolving localhost without internet connection

dnsmasq is a domain name cache and forwarder, also called a proxy server, it is not a DNS server. ref https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dnsmasq , thus requiring an Internet based DNS server. To set up a private DNS, you must use bind instead, as in the article: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tut...

Re: ATI Radeon FireGL V7700 - hdw acceleration does not work

Yes, nomodeset blocks any hardware acceleration. Is your monitor EDID read properly? I notice that the graphics resolution reported is 1280x1024@ 0.0 Hz. Instead of nomodeset , have you tried a GRUB kernel option of vga=795 after/in place of "quiet splash"? If it works, it can be added to /etc/defau...

Re: dnsmasq: Resolving localhost without internet connection

As Cosmo said. If you are still connected to the router the router can provide your DNS server. Otherwise you will have to be operating from within a virtual machine, as I don't know of any method of providing a DNS server inside the machine to the same IP connection. Otherwise why use a DNS system,...

Re: Laptop hang on shutdown (reboot: power off)

What response do you get when you enter this code in a terminal to attempt shutdown:

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -P now
It sounds as if your menu selection for shutdown has something like shutdown -H now as the option instead.

Re: Can't connect to another WiFi AP

First check that there is a script called nfs]/b] in /etc/init.d
If there is, you should be able to stop your nfs service and restart without restarting your computer by performing an

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/nfs stop
then

Code: Select all

etc/init.d/nfs start
Or, as you have found out, restarting your system.
