Re: Banshee crashing with iPod Touch 4th Gen

There is a problem listed with late model iPods and iPod touches. Read the following article for more information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone . Basically Apple doesn't want to play well with even Windows machines for managing playlists and files. There are work-arounds ...

Re: dnsmasq: Resolving localhost without internet connection

Your default DNS service provider is always either on the Internet or your router, because most people can already get the network address of the local machine. If you aren't connected to at least a router, why would you be using the Internet protocol?

Re: installing pantheon

Yes, you can take the source code for the pantheon desktop, re-write it for use under Ubuntu/Mint, package it for use with dpkg, then maintain the desktop package with any changes that are made as and when they are made since no one else will know what changes you had to make to get it working under...

Re: alternatives to /home?

That is correct, by building your own system, possibly using Linux From Scratch as a basis or not using LFS, you can define where files are stored, but only by essentially re-writing and re-compiling just about every program which accesses the file system, including the OS kernel. This would NOT, re...

Re: HELP - access problems with removable hard drive

There are two threads here, but here goes. You can use rsync or incremental backup and boot from your clone (or clones), but you have to use a non-clone operating system (hopefully read-only) to do your backup work. The problem is that you can't have two copies active of an operating system. That wo...

Re: Not easy to install mint using a 4k monitor

I found a couple of threads in a Debian forum http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=41881 and in an Ubuntu forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2164924 which discuss the setting methods and possible gotchas working with a 4K display.

Re: Libre Office TTF and Antialiasing?

There are several solutions mapped here: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/15041/calibri-and-cambria-fonts-in-libreoffice/ None of the above are ideal. Best solution is to change your default font from Calibri to Arial (included in the mscorefonts package in the repositories) or install a free...

Re: What to do with EFI and swap in a cloned double boot dri

Your problem only occurs if you try to boot from either the original or clone with the other disk connected. if you boot from Live media (CD/DVD or flash drive to access both drives and otherwise disconnect one copy, you should not have to juggle UUIDs, labels, /etc/fstab , etc.

If you are using Google Chrome and not Chromium, pepperflashplugin-nonfree should be already installed in the package and updated with Google Chrome. AFAIK, Google Chrome is installed and pepperflash is extracted from Google Chrome in order to install the package for use by Chromium or other web bro...

Re: HELP - access problems with removable hard drive

If you want to clone your system nowadays (I misunderstood, I thought you were backing up your system), you must first boot with an OS independent of the base system you are trying to clone, that is, boot from a Clonezilla Live CD or similar, make your copy (or copies), then use your BIOS or EFI to ...

Re: alternatives to /home?

You could use either Gentoo or Arch as well as LFS, but in any case, you are going to have some serious work defining what your minimal system should do, and what it should not. That will probably take more time than building your system, and building your system is not a weekend project.

Re: Broadcom Bluetooth

First, your Broadcom 4132 chip is for WiFi, not Bluetooth. These are two separate functions and are not provided by the same chip from any manufacturer of which I am aware.

Also, have you installed the package blueman with either Synaptic or Software Manager?

Re: Mint cannot see partitions

Windows 8.1 will normally be installed with GPT partitions, not MBR type partitions, and UEFI, which will block, for example, fdisk from creating any partitions. GParted or Kparted GUI programs should recognize this. GPT partitioning allows for a larger number of primary partitions, and should allow...

Re: Export iTunes saved content

Some iTunes content which is protected by Digital Rights Management will not be able to be exported to a form which is usable for Linux. Apple set it up that way so that only Mac OS X and Windows users with iTunes installed can access that content.

Re: xdm trouble

The only xdm I can find related to Linux is a package which should be installed from the Mint repositories, not by Firefox or any other web browser. If you are attempting to load a random package from the Internet, please don't. You can break your Mint installation in other ways. Instead install usi...

Re: Installing Apps and desktops

If you install an alternative desktop, it never shows up in your menu while in Mint. Instead it will show up in your login screen. Where it shows up depends on which login screen display manager you are using, eg. LightDM, MDM, GDM, etc.

Re: Cannot boot normally, recovery mode breaks nvidia driver

The 'nomodeset' parameter in the kernel boot line of GRUB is not designed for games or graphics intensive applications, it completely blocks video mode setting in the video driver to allow visible output of your text when problems occur with your video driver. In the same fashion, recovery mode usua...

Re: "Slideshow" software to use on normal DVD player

Look up Kodak Picture CD format for more information on pictures without a software wrapper. DeVeDe, Kdenlive, and various video editors (even Windows Movie Maker) usually wrap a video format around the slide show so that you can include audio with your slide show, such as .avi, .mp4, .etc.

Re: HELP - access problems with removable hard drive

To your unanswered question: The original Linux backup method used tar and gzip, as outlined in this tutorial: http://www.linux.org/threads/file-backup-tar-gzip.4102/ . There are options for tar to do an incremental backup. Read the man pages if you are interested. And having been a Netware system a...
