SOLVED - Making Alt-F1 access Main Menu instead of app menu

Hi all, I use LMDE both at home and at work, with Mate desktop. This setup has one panel in the bottom and other in the top, with Applications, Locals and System Menus. I want to remove them and switch to the Main Menu, which takes less keystrokes to use, and I find it cleaner. I then added Main Men...

Not all users are shown in MDM login menu

Hi all, I'm using LMDE with MDM (1.0.8+lmde) and Mate. My MDM login menu is configured to simple (no themes) with faces. I have just added an user (guest) and it just does not appear in the MDM login menu. I added the user with both adduser and useradd, disabling home directory creation (--no-create...

Re: Wrong duplicated fstab entries after updates

I forgot to mention important info from my installation. Here's my inxi -S output: System: Host Emerson Kernel 3.2.0-3-686-pae i686 (32 bit) Distro Linux Mint Debian Edition And this is a one year old (or more) install. I installed Mint again from the same CD I used for my current installation, and ...

Wrong duplicated fstab entries after updates

Hi all, I have LMDE with Mate tracking latest repos. I do my updates not often - I usually end up having over 1,000 outdated packages. Now, trying to solve another problem, I noticed my fstab had incorrect entries. I'm sure I didn't do these changes, and none else did either (none knows squat of Lin...

Re: tmp is not using swap space

Yes, this is all automatically done by LMDE. I'm not much experienced in Linux, so I don't mess too much on things unless I have a problem. So the problem is that tmpfs was limited by the system defaults. So it would never grow enough to use swap, even when required to grow more. I learned that I ca...

[SOLVED] tmp is not using swap space

(I first posted this in the Newbie forum but, after STFW, I realized this is all but a newbie question, so I'm moving it here) Hi all, I'm trying to watch a big video in Firefox, but video download always stops at around 300MB. I noticed that's what's available in /tmp: me@host ~ $ df -h | grep tmp ...

Re: [Solved] Cups fails to start at boot - cupsd error

Thanks! I asked a review of the fixed version number. So I'll wait for the UP to get 1.5.3-2.3 and test it. In the meanwhile, I'll keep the 1.5.3-4 compiled from source.

Re: [Solved] Cups fails to start at boot - cupsd error

Shut down and restarted. Cups is up and running again.
That probably means cups should be upgraded in the repo. I'll probably file a bug. In the meantime, if someone wants to suggest tests, I'm willing to perform and report them.
Best regards,
Emerson

[Solved] Cups fails to start at boot - cupsd error

Hi all, Today cups didn't start automatically at boot. I tried to start cupsd manually and got the following error: /usr/sbin/cupsd: symbol lookup error: /usr/sbin/cupsd: undefined symbol: _ppdCacheGetFinishingOptions There's a bug in the cups version 1.5.3-1 (currently present in latest repo), and ...

Re: Linux Mint 13 keeps freezing completely

Your starting point are the log lines with "Error". Lines with "Warning" can help too. I tried installing XFCE. Though less frequent, freezes continued, so I removed XFCE. But I found out there were conflicting packages installed, like mint-flashplugin and other flash plugin stuff, and more than one...

Re: Linux Mint 13 keeps freezing completely

The problem is occurring for me with MATE, though, not with Cinnamon. With me too. Pls see http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=219&t=106514 for some details (not from a Linux expert, be advised! 8) ). If you can continue with Ctrl-Alt-F1 (my system sometimes doesn't respond to this or Ctrl-...

Re: Mate freezes - maybe related to psmouse or smartscroll

One funny thing: despite the error message points to psmouse, the mouse is the only thing that actually works during these hangups. This is reproduced every time.

Mate freezes - maybe related to psmouse or smartscroll

I'm using LMDE, following the 'latest' flavour, with Mate and still using gdm3 (didn't migrate do mdm yet). Sometimes, my computer freezes for some minutes, usually during or after a CPU intensive task. Today it froze, and I got this from tail /var/log/messages: Jun 30 13:40:54 <host> kernel: [ 7300...

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

...at work, Mate works good, except is looks like Gnome 3 Fallback mode, with the two panels and such. I wanted it to be just like I had in Gnome 2. Did I do anything wrong? I found out that I'm not running into a "Gnome sHell heritage" issue or something like that. It's just that Mate also has the...

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hi all, First, thanks a whole lot, perberos! You saved my home and work computers! Now, a question: I installed Mate in two computers - home and work, as said - and, at home, I got the Gnome 2 desktop back, with everything. But, at work, Mate works good, except is looks like Gnome 3 Fallback mode, w...

Re: Mint Desktop Environment Popularity Poll

I was quite happy with Gnome 2. I wasn't following Gnome development, so I was somehow caught by surprise by Gnome 3. Well, gave it a try. Gnome Shell didn't work in first place, due to the video driver or something. After seeing what's like in descriptions all over the web, I'm glad it didn't work....

Re: firefox versus explorer !!!

The add-on is IE Tab 2. In fact, there are 2 or 3 add-ons with similar names. IE Tab 2 is the one which replaces the original IE Tab, fully updated and funcional.
Every time you can, ask web page developers to write pages correctly, instead of using code dedicated to a single browser...

Re: I want to downgrade to firefox 3.6.22, Mint11. How to do

You can download 3.6.23 here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html And then just unpack it in /opt: cp (directory where you donwloaded Firefox to)firefox-*.tar /opt cd /opt tar -xvf firefox-*.tar This way, you just replace the executable files and stuff, without messing anything els...
