20 year lifetime? Possibly so but 20 years - 1990 - Windows 3.0, DOS 4.x., 40MB hard drive, 8mb RAM, 40mhz clock. I don't think I would want to be saddled with that now. I probably do have the disks for Wordstar and Quattro around here somewhere though. I thought they were great stuff 20 years ago. ...

In my opinion, upgrade your RAM to 2gb and continue to use the computer for as long as you feel that it does the job for you. You can bet that operating systems will continue to be more demanding so your next computer upgrade might be driven by your desire to upgrade your operating system. In any ca...

You said you have two slots allowing 1gb each. You also said that you weren't suppose to mix RAM types. I would suggest 1gb in each slot and toss the 512mg RAM. 2gb is not too much for your processor and you will probably notice an increase in performance, depending on what you are doing.

Wow, I didn't know older people were so interested in the open source and free software world! It's bizarre, since most people that didn't grow up with computers like I have, aren't that interested in learning how to use modern technology. You must have amazing perspective!
