No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)

Mint 17.3, Nvidia video card, AMD processor This is a computer dedicated to running home videos and photographs through HDMI to family room TV. Video and audio are both fine with Windows 7 so the graphics card is working OK. With Mint 17.3, video is great but no sound at all. I have looked at a lot ...

Re: Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

Mute Ant --- I tried the wipefs, got the same response you show in your example. This 16gb Sandisk Cruzer still won't mount.
This will be the second USB thumbdrive I have had to dumpster in the last few months. Fortunately thumbdrives are cheap, especially the small ones.

Re: Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

Continuing the investigation - I have a Silicon Power 128gb USB drive that I had used for Mint 18 beta live. I attempted to return it to use using gparted in Mint 18 Mate. In Mint 18, gparted reports this thing as being 500gb plus and would not create a new partition table. I rebooted Mint 17.3 (Mat...

Re: Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

The Sandisk is a USB Sandisk Cruzer, not an SD card. No Lock.
Besides that, it can be programmed as a bootable USB stick using Image Write.

Re: Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

to trytip: I had tried what you suggested before but I tried again. This time I got one USB drive (PNY, 128gb) back in mountable condition but another (Sandisk 16gb) will still not mount and cannot be mounted. I am quite sure that I initially reformatted this drive using the Mint USB Stick Formatter...

Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

I have some USB thumbdrives from various manufacturers that have been used as bootable USB sticks using the Mint "USB Image Writer". I would like to use them as normal data drives and can format them to Fat 32 or ext4 using gparted. However, they will not mount, either in Mint 17.3 or Wind...

Re: How to run Sketchup on Wine?

I found that Sketchup runs in Wine but not particularly well. I have Win XP installed in a virtual box (isolated from the internet) and find that Sketchup and other essential Windows programs run quite well. There is little or no downside to running Windows in a virtual box (except of course the sni...

Re: Epson Artisan 1430 experience

Concerning your IP address problem, could you set your router to permanently reserve an address for your printer? In my router this is called the "DHCP RESERVATIONS LIST" and while I don't currently have a wireless printer I do reserve IP addresses for my wireless connected laptop computer...

Re: WINE doesn't find mount manager [SOLVED]

I did the whole purging routine again and still found a bunch of WINE related programs when I searched for WINE in the Software Manager. I searched through the directory trees to make sure all WINE related stuff was gone. (Some times Caja is a lot more help than the terminal in doing this stuff) I k...

WINE doesn't find mount manager [SOLVED]

I am using Mint 17 Mate. To solve problems with WINE 1.6.2, I completely flushed WINE and all of its bits and pieces (I think). I have re-installed WINE but cannot get it to install my programs (Word 2003, Family Tree Maker). In "Wine Configuration" under the "Drives" tab I get t...

Re: Mint 13 and 17: have the developers got it wrong?

As a possible point of reference, I had no trouble installing and running Mint 17 Mate (32 bit) on an HP Pavillion DV5000. This is now a dual boot configuration with Mint 17 on the same hard drive with Windows XP. Of course I fiddled with the partitions some on the drive. I had Mint 13 on the machin...

Fastest Linux Install Ever!

In my experiments with Linux over the last 8 years or so I have made hundreds of installations, mostly from CD/DVD to hard drive. Today I experienced the fastest Linux install ever when I installed Mint 17 on a 128GB PNY USB 3.0 flash drive plugged in to an HP Envy 17. The install media was on a USB...

Re: Mint 17 on HP Envy 17

It says that it uses Master Boot Record partitioning. So I could save the contents of the HP-Tools partition (107mb), delete that partition, shrink the File System partition, create an extended partition in the space that was freed up after shrinking, and create logical partitions in the extended pa...

Mint 17 on HP Envy 17

I have a new HP Envy 17 laptop with a UEFI installation of Windows 7. Secure boot is OFF. Mint 17 boots just fine from a DVD and everything seems to work OK including video and sound. As is usual with HP computers, the installation uses 4 partitions but it is my (admittedly limited) understanding th...

Re: SOLVED (I think) Message "$HOME/.dmrc file ignored"

"That guide pretty well covers it - except he neglected to tell you what to do if it is missing... :?" I think the error message is wrong - the .dmrc file seems to be in the /home/user folder, not the /home folder. Anyway, it renewed and/or rebuilt itself when I rebooted and contains [desk...

Re: Message "$HOME/.dmrc file ignored"

I think I have this solved. I found a guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=976610 that goes into considerable length on the subject.
At least I can reboot without an error message.
Sorry to have taken up space and time here.

SOLVED (I think) Message "$HOME/.dmrc file ignored"

Using Mint 17 Mate. I fiddled with permissions trying to solve a file access problem that should have been solved another way. Now I get a message at startup stating "$HOME/.dmrc file ignored", "File should be owned by user and have 644 permission" , and "$HOME must be owned...

Re: Epson Artisan 1430 experience

quote: "The Artisan 1430 is a printer only - no scanner."

That's just fine with me - I have a perfectly good (several years old) Epson 2450 scanner and I am not much interested in that "all in one" thing.

Epson Artisan 1430 experience

Does anyone have experience with the Epson Artisan 1430?
Particularly, is there any problem setting it up as a wireless printer?
I don't have one of these but I am considering buying one.
