Re: Lightweight OS? for old computer.

I am running Mint 13 Mate on a 4 year old HP Mini 210 with Intel Atom N455 running at 1.66 mhz and 2gb RAM. I am not much impressed with this HP netbook but I find the performance to be adequate with Mint 13, roughly equivalent to the minimal version of Windows 7 also installed on the computer. Othe...

Re: Length of changeover to Linux?

I have been fiddling with Linux (hundreds of installs) for over 7 years (a lot longer than that if I include the miserable piece of junk Red Hat that I tried over 15 years ago) and finally this year decided to go to Linux (Mint 17 Mate) full time. That is, full time except that I still have Win 7 as...

Re: Mint 17 and Virtualbox no USBs

I just went through the same thing with Mint 17. First, my Mint 17 installs did not automatically add my user name to the "vboxusers" line in "/etc/group". Adding your user name to that line in "/etc/group" might fix the problem. Apparently the user name was added autom...

Laserjet 451 - Use both ethernet and USB?

Possibly someone has a quick answer on this before I start trying to dig through HP support: A color Laserjet 451 has an ethernet port and a USB port. Can both of these ports be active at the same time?

Re: VM VirtualBox - USB does not work (Solved)

All working now - USB devices properly recognized. Before I found out about the problem with "/etc/group", I managed to mismatch the versions of VirtualBox and the extenions. The main computer is working with version 4.3.12 and the secondary computer is working with version 4.3.14. kyphi -...

Re: VM VirtualBox - USB does not work (Halfway Solved)

OK - another clue. On a secondary (test) Mint 17 computer with exactly the same VirtualBox and XP installation (again copied from the working Mint13 install) after I correct the /etc/group problem USB appears to working just like it should. So at this point I think there is something wrong with the ...

Re: VM VirtualBox - USB does not work (Halfway Solved)

The "Guest Additions", "Expansion Pack", and the "XP SP3" have been installed. When I plug in a USB flash drive, XP recognizes that a USB device has been connected but gives a message that the "USB has malfunctioned and is not recognized". All this works fine ...

Re: VM VirtualBox - USB does not work (Halfway Solved)

Partially solved: I had to add my username to the end of the vboxusers line in "/etc/group". VirtualBox now recognizes the USB devices but Win XP does not recognize them yet. More digging required.

VM VirtualBox - USB does not work (Solved)

I had VirtualBox version 4.3.6 and Win XP working fine in Mint 13. With Mint 17 version 4.3.12 was installed but Win XP cannot access USB devices. I get a message that "No USB devices are available". I then upgraded Virtual box to Version 4.3.14 (along with the 4.3.14 extensions) but USB s...

Re: Using Wine

Hi again Jerry comments about 32 bit and 64 bit made me think - I installed Mint as 32 bit thinking this was a 32 bit machine but I see now that it is a 64 bit machine, so I guess the question is should I re-install. But that's not a question for this forum. I'll repost. I copied Spider and Freecel...

Re: Using Wine

Hi Jerry N Interesting that you have been able to get it to work. What file did you start with? Was it something like SpiderSolitaire.exe? Can you remember the steps you took to get Wine to work? Appreciate your help. I'm using Mint 17 Mate 64 bit. I copied spider.exe and freecell.exe from the Syst...

Re: Using Wine

I run Spider and Freecell from Windows XP with no problem at all using WINE. To me, the Linux versions of these simple games have ugly graphics, as do the Windows 7 versions. One of the games asks for something called "gecko" the first time it is run and then it either installs "gecko...

Re: How to resize linux partition without CD?

CAUTION! You don't say if your Windows installation is XP, Vista, or Win 7. If Vista or Win 7, DO NOT used GPARTED or KPARTED or anything like that to reduce the size of your sd2 partition. Windows has built-in utilities for resizing it's NTFS partitions - use them. I have successfully resized Win X...

Re: Wine apps won't print in MINT 17

To WinterTroubles: Fantastic! I followed the thread you gave me, installed libcups2:i386, and applications under Wine print just fine now. I had already done a search for this problem on these forums but I guess I didn't start with the right search parameters or didn't pay adequate attention to the ...

Wine apps won't print in MINT 17 (SOLVED)

I have MINT 17 Mate with Wine installed. Printers are installed and work with Linux applications. When I try to print from a Wine App, ie Notepad or Word 2003, I get a message that there are no printers installed. Wine and the associated Windows applications printed without difficulty in Mint 13 I p...

"Have you installed the printer drivers into Wine to tell it to print?"

I am not sure how to go about that but I will look into it. I have never had to do that before.

MINT17 No Wine Print

Installed Wine + Office 2003 applications in Mint 17.
When I tried to print from Word or Excel, I got a message that no printers were installed.
This works perfectly in Mint 13 and is critical.
Am I missing something (again)?

Re: Imagewrite does not work

I still don't know how to make the imagewriter work but I installed unetbootin in Mint 13 and was able to get the Mint 13 Mate image properly installed on a USB stick. From there, I installed it on the netbook and it seems to be working just fine, at least fine as far as netbooks go.

Imagewrite does not work

I am trying to make a Mint 13 (Mate) USB stick to install Mint on a crummy netbook. In Imagewriter, I find the proper .ISO and select the proper USB device, a Verbatum "Store and Go". I tell Imagewriter to start and it gives me the message that "/dev/sdi has been unmounted". At t...
