Re: Mint 12 Tips & Tricks Guide (updated Dec 1)
I like the look of the desktop in 2A. I could work with that. I'll have to keep an eye out for when you've ironed out the bugs, not being competent/knowledgeable enough myself to make a decent contribution.

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" released!
Font rendering in MATE is not good at the moment, at least on my friend's Compaq laptop (I think it has an Nvidia adapter), so I've cut her loose on Gnome 3 with the appropriate MGSE extensions turned on. She's game, 63 years old, non-technical, and keen to switch from Windows Vista to a controversi...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" released!
Well Clem, I did it. To somebody else. I've loaded 12 onto a friend's laptop since she was desperate to escape the glacially slow clutches of Windows Vista. She's very happy, coming from the lowest circle of hell, being a non-techie, and basically only ever using Firefox. However, I'm not convinced ...

Re: Installation of Linux Mint after downloading.
Mandar, if you still want to run Office 2007 once Linux is installed, the following is very useful: http://www.wine-reviews.net/wine-reviews/microsoft/office-2007-in-ubuntu-910-with-wine-1132.html It's a little out of date, but if you follow the instructions to the letter it still works just fine. I...

Re: How To Remove Linux Mint Custom Google Search in Firefox
I quite agree with the principle of supporting Mint through use of the custom search engine; the problem lies with the annoyingly handicapped version of Google that the add-on gives me. It really frustrates me, and I've been driven to remove it. I prefer the Amazon/eBay idea. Meanwhile, I intend to ...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!
To date, I have been unable to complete installation on a virtual machine. (VirtualBox 4.1.6, Windows 7) I've managed to install a 12 RC virtual machine running in VB 4.1.6 on my Mint 11 desktop and it's working. It is very slow though, even though I've given it access to plenty of resources, and I...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!
I haven't been able to get far running the RC from the DVD so I'm installing VirtualBox and installing it there. I'm looking forward to trying MATE; from the YouTube video posted above it looks like it might be just the ticket for we change-resistant individuals who wish to cling to our finely tuned...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!
If you look at the Mint 12 RC thread, there are a number of folks who have posted on all that  Pardon me for being a dummie, but I can't find the 12 RC thread you're referring to, assuming that you don't mean this one... And I can't figure out how to run MATE when booting from the RC DVD. Any...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!
Oh dear! I've been testing the RC for a couple of hours now and I'm really not liking it. Where have all my right-clicks gone? How do I put icons on my desktop? The whole environment seems to have suddenly become complex and confusing. Mint 11/Gnome 2 is just so clean and elegant. I know that Clem's...

Re: LMDE 201108 RC (Gnome & Xfce) released!
I was setting up my old computer for my 8 year old son, and I used it as a test bed for Ubuntu and its Unity interface. Terrible thing, I just can't convince myself to like it. So, after that unpleasant diversion I moved on to the real object, Mint Xfce. Installing from the 201104 disc gave me probl...

Re: [LMDE] Configuring bootloader...
I'm experiencing the same problem trying to install LMDE XFCE 201104 on my son's computer, which is my old Athlon 2600+ with 2Gb of RAM. Installation hangs at the bootloader configuration/checking stage. I'm not very techie so before I start down the path of messing with Grub I've decided to downloa...

Re: Screen resolution - ATI Radeon & Mint 10.
Well, the problem is solved! I was provided with the following link over at the Ubuntu forum, and followed it to the very letter. http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Natty_Installation_Guide#Installing_the_drivers_manually I ended up right back at square one again. No display. But wait! The mess...

Screen resolution - ATI Radeon & Mint 10.
Hi folks, Before I get started, I wish to apologise in advance if this topic is covered elsewhere. If so, can you please point me to the relevant thread? Down to business: I've bought myself a nice cheap upgrade kit from the local PC parts store, comprising an AMD X2 255 processor sitting in a Gigab...

Re: Monthly bandwidth being stolen by aliens!
Does Gary use any P2P software? No, he doesn't Sleven. He's strictly a basic Firefox/Thunderbird user. Now pardon my internet connection ignorance fellas, but if all that traffic is DNS-related, does it account for the fact that the data is all travelling one way (ie, incoming). There is no outgoin...

Thanks guys. That's all very helpful. I'm not sure when I'll get back around to Gary's but it will be in the next few days and I'll be sure to follow your instructions and report back.

Re: Monthly bandwidth being stolen by aliens!
Now that is an interesting command! I'm running it on my computer just now and it appears that I have active connections to websites I've closed. Quite fascinating. I'll report back when I've had a chance to run it on Gary's computer. However, as stated above, I have tried turning on his firewall, w...

Re: Monthly bandwidth being stolen by aliens!
Gary does have the weather applet running, but the use you indicate doesn't cover his incoming data, which is a constant stream, varying in speed (as I indicated above) between approximately 100 and 500 bytes/second. Good idea though, worth covering that one.

Re: Monthly bandwidth being stolen by aliens!
Thanks for the reply. He has a cable modem with an ISP-supplied fixed IP address, other than that I can't tell you much. I've always had ADSL at home so I don't know anything about cable modems. Is one-way traffic the norm? Remember that there is no outgoing traffic at idle, just the 100-500 bytes/s...
