Re: Can Admin & Standard user accounts privileges be swapped

You should be able to just change ownership of the Virtualbox image. You'll need to locate it first, and I'd suggest moving it to the user /home folder, and then, as root (or with sudo)

Code: Select all

chown username vboximage.vdi

Re: What is linux mint?

There's no subscription, and no premium. It's free (as in no cost) and free (as in you can do what you want with it). Edit: I should add that free as in you can do what you want is still restricted by the license, but it's a rather liberal license that you aren't likely to breach unless you make an ...

Re: [SOLVED]using text editor with terminal

I would add to this more a word of caution than anything. If you are simply copying and pasting commands without an understanding of what they are doing, then wait some time for others to at least have an opportunity to look at the commands before using them. Most Linux forum users will be genuinely...

Re: What is linux mint?

To question 1: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint To Question 2 (games): Yes, you can play games, but whether you can play the games that you are used to is a different question. Some Windows games can be coerced into working, some have Linux versions or equivalent versions, and some will not w...

Re: Change the mount point of /home

You have to be a little careful with this - you can do it from a livecd most easily, but to do it from a running system you need to make changes in the correct order. There will be a home directory in /, but for the moment this is simply a mount point for your separate partition. To move home into /...

Re: Sed command

Yes, I knew that you could use anything as a delimeter. eg:

Code: Select all

echo 123 | sed 'sk123k456k'
should return "456" and is valid using k as a delimeter. However, for consistency I use / without exception, and esacpe / when I need to:

Code: Select all

echo "1/2" | sed 's/1\/2/2\/4/'
should return "2/4"

Ahh, yes. My bad - Garvan is right. I'm so used to using / as a delimiter I read it wrong :)

@soraver

Have you tried installing the propriety drivers? I'm pretty sure that the drivers no longer support your card. AFAIK you should be fine with the Gallium drivers.

Re: Sed command

I agree with Pilosopong Tasyo that the structure of that sed is designed to delete the contents of whatever it is run on. It won't delete actual files, but it will remove the content of files (which can be equally bad), and off the top of my head I can think of no valid reason to use such a construc...

Re: Alsa without Pulseaudio not possible in Sid?

I'm running Debian sid without pulse and have audio via alsa. The biggest hurdle was getting the sound cards loaded in the right order, which means fiddling with .asoundrc, alsa blacklist and alsa.conf

Bit of new conky code - google calendar appointments

OK, mainly a script that probably has applications outside of conky with a little modification, but primarily designed for conky. This will query google calendars for upcoming appointments (and appointments in the last 5 days) and display them in your conky. It requires the gcalcli package to work. ...

Re: Alot miscellaneous questions

You may want to take a look at gvim (part of the vim package) as an alternative to gedit. Takes a little getting used to but it's very powerful. As for cheese, in my experience it's generally a bit buggy anyway (though still maintained so you could post a bug report). Camorama has proved pretty reli...

heff, Let me be honest, I've read through your many posts (submitted quick fire) with a more cursory glance than I would have, and I'm undecided whether you have genuine questions or if you are trolling. If your questions are genuine, may I suggest that in the first instance you read some of the thr...

Re: ATI/AMD propritary FGLRX graphics driver.

I'm seeing people reporting fglrx problems with Gnome 3 systems on a variety of forums (Here, Ubuntu forums, Debian forums, LQ etc). I don't know what the gnome team have done but they seem to have royally messed up propriety drivers (I'm seeing NV problems starting to crop up, too). It's likely tha...

care to tell us what errors/messages "make install" gives you (note - while ./configure and make can usually be done as a normal user, make install requires sudo)

Re: another no sound case

did you run the cat command before or after making the changes to alsa-base.conf? It's very odd that your system isn't picking up any sound cards whatsoever? If you ran it before, try running it again and see if the results differ.

Re: another no sound case

I'd guess that the HDMI controller on your gfx card is stealing the output. What's the output of:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/asound/cards
