Re: XFCE: Won't play sounds from two or more sources:

Weird, I was using exclusively Alsa for years and never had problems with playback from multiple sources. I have a new comp now and indeed it seems to be unable to play back from more than one source. I suspect it's time to plug in my ancient soundblaster live because Intel can't into making real so...

Re: The whole Pulseaudio business...

For some weird reason it was using my CPU and sound would stop working correctly when multiple applications are playing sound. Never had such a thing happen with ALSA.

The whole Pulseaudio business...

Every time when I install a new Linux Mint, I have to uninstall pulseaudio and install alsa or something like that. From what I see, quite a lot of people has problems with pulseaudio. It would be really nice if there would be some application or something like that for enabling and disabling sound ...

Re: Why do so many people think XFCE is lightweight?

I wish there would be some Windows 98-lightweight desktop environment with the same level of functionality. It's so funny to see all these sluggish desktop environments being called lightweight when Windows 98 still had better performance on a 75mhz processor than they have on a 2400mhz one.

Re: Horribly slow installation.

IIRC I used k3b. I don't remember the speed.

I have noticed something seriosly bizzarre. Clicking around the installer window - highlighting text or opening a menu, causes the installation to progress singificantly faster - with visually visible progress O_o .

Horribly slow installation.

I decided to switch to LMDE today and I'm installing it and I have a problem. Two hours have passed and I'm around 30%, the install is progressing extremely slowly.

Re: Problem with DVD burning.

I put in a DVD try to burn it. Either it writes it or not. Then if it is burned, I eject it, put it in again to check if the files are burned properly. Then I eject it again. Insert another blank disk, try to burn it and either it burns it or tries to format it. It may happen either way with the sam...

Re: Problem with DVD burning.

The same thing happens. It tries to erase a blank DVD which obviously fails. Sometimes it manages to burn a disk or two but then the pre-formatting bug appears and once it appears I don't get a chance to record without that bug until I'll restart the computer.

Problem with DVD burning.

K3B tries to erase disks that it already recognized as empty, Xfburn loses a speed list after a few recordings.

[Solved]My home partition is broken.

It happened a few hours ago. I got some stuttering in some moments, computer freezing for a bit, then a program that I was using has crashed when saving a file - writing a 0 byte file, trying to save anything would cause a crash, then every program crashed and I had to reset the computer and it woul...

Is it possible? A problem with Wine

So, I was using Wine for quite some time without big trouble until at 1.3.15, there was an upgrade without OSS support and I had to downgrade to 1.2.3. A few games didn't work, so I was regularly checking if new upgrades have OSS suport back. After a month, 1.3.24 came out and it had OSS support. Wh...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

To be popular, Linux needs to have lots of high quality *finished* software and official driver support. It isn't going to happen unless there's going to be a single stable (with long term support - like in Windows XP long, not 3 years) main Linux to support. So... like RHEL? Red Hat has varying de...

Re: Massive performance drop after upgrade from Mint 7 to 9

If that doesn't work you might try one of the other versions with a lighter desktop environment like the LXDE or Fluxbox editions. They are both designed for computer that are light on recourses. I have installed the LXDE environment and it works about 500% faster with almost Windows-like performan...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

The amount of choice is only indirectly responsible for the low popularity. To be popular, Linux needs to have lots of high quality *finished* software and official driver support. Re: Non Nerds who use Linux - Vote Here!

I'm a metalhead. I haven't even heard about nerds until about 2 years ago.

I can't say I love Linux, any more than I love my bookshelf or my chair. It's just a thing that I use.
