You can run the update from a console instead. It will output messages that can help you find the problem.
To update write:
sudo apt-get update
...and boldly hit return.

Re: Unable to download phone software

I just downloaded pictures from my nokia and I didn't need to do anything special. It was recognised as a memory unit and I could just drag and drop just like we like it. Maybe the phone needs to be activated... What model do you have? This guy describes how it is supposed to interact with the compu...

Re: *.desktop files

So you just navigate to the place where you find: vpn_install.sh
and then run it by typing: ./vpn_install.sh
You may have to make vpn_install.sh executable by typing:
chmod +x vpn_install.sh

Re: *.desktop files

.desktop files is a mostly gnome thing I think. Every app under gnome is supposed to have one... again, I think so. But they are not for installing anything but for launching applications. Is there a README file in it? The usual way to installing software from a 'tarball' is to go: ./configure make ...

Allmost there... :D -u will tell scrot to focus on the active window so: scrot -d 20 -u screenshot.png & castle-combat Will take a screenshot after 20 seconds. screenshot of app in full screen? [ALMOST SOLVED]

EDIT! Unfortunately I've had a hard time explaining what the issue is here. My bad. I do know how to take a basic screenshot! The easiest way for you to see what I'm trying to solve/achieve is to try and take a screenshot of the same programs that have failed me. For instance: tomatoes or berusky (...

Re: difference between two files almost identical files

One is in Windows format and the other Unix. Open in a text editor and choose "save as" to save them in the same format.

The command cmp gives no output if the two files are the same:
$cmp file1 file2
