Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

The signature bars from mmesantos1 are absolutely amazing and inspired me to have a go at my own :)
It's no where near in terms of professionalism but I'm learning!

Re: Openshot Video Editor

It is indeed very good. I've put together a few videos of family stuff and they've come out very well.

The effects are great and the GUI is really easy to navigate. I do suffer from occasional crashes when using the Blender rendered titles but I've yet to diagnose why.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

When I finally managed to pull the files onto the USB it took no less than 40 minutes for 6GB of data. After putting my memory stick into my Mint 10 PC the files were copied in just less than 4 minutes. Amazingly my work laptop is MUCH better spec'd than my home desktop. Reading from a USB flash dr...

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

As an end user working for a major telco, our support is next to non-existent (I'm not blaming MS for this) Yeah, I'm guessing the telco has quite a few hoops to jump through before anything gets escalated. Thanks for the reality check Kendall. Maybe that is the case. Either way I still contend wit...

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

Keep in mind that enterprise level support from a lot of companies is often many times better than consumer level support. Most notably Microsoft and Dell where enterprise level support is almost infinitely better. I don't have any experience of this. As an end user working for a major telco, our s...

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

I agree totally Oscar.

My better half had no idea there were other options, other than Windows. She also did not know that such excellent support existed. I'm sure posts have touched on it before but maybe people that are unwilling to look don't really deserve anything better!

Re: Macbook Pro 13" with Mint Possible?

In a nutshell, does Linux mint work successfully on the current Macbook Pro or are there teething issues? Currently using mint in a VM but prfer to dual boot if supported properly? I just posted on this on another thread. I used Mint 10 to recover data from a Mac Book Pro (6 months old) with a fail...

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

And of course there's the matter of support. Who do I call? For those of us eager to learn the ins and outs of our operating system, this isn't a huge issue, as we rely on forums like this and our ability to use google and other resources online. But this just won't do for the masses, and it will c...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Some things I needed to do today have reinforced why I will not give up on Linux; I have a Mini DV Panasonic video camera that does not have drivers for Linux so I was forced to use my work laptop to retrieve the video (the camera does not have Firewire). Anyway I managed to get the video onto my XP...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

Heh DLK, Please let me know if you want me to remove it. I'm not completely sure what's acceptable and I'm only really playing with Gimp. The logo was in a desktop by Zwopper and I thought it originated there, hence the comment. I don't want to step on anyone's toes and have no concern about removi...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

Need to jump ship from Gnome to KDE for more themeing options I think (maybe at the weekend :P ) my favorite thing about KDE is you have free alteration of the KDM and can change ur splash screen (not the plymouth one tho) I don't see wha...

Re: Year of the Linux Desktop?

I know from experience that many people see Windows as being the ONLY OS for PC's (unaware that other options exist). As linux makes in roads through phones, tablets and net books it does not take a huge leap of faith to realise people may start to realise other (better) options exist for their PC. ...

Re: Custom PC

I've built my last few PC's, my last one based on an E2180 (OC'd to a whopping 2.7GHz  ). It's currently due for replacement and I was thinking about moving to the AMD platform, probably the Phenom II X4 AM3 970 chip which seems to have really good performance for it's cost. BTW the reason I'v...
