it's easy, you do that, then run synaptic and select packages you want and upgrade them :)
after you are done remove this line and you are safe

alt+f2
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.lst

add this line:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

and you are good to go with your updates

Run this command: gconf-editor (you can run it with Alt+F2 run dialog box). After go to: apps -> nautilus -> desktop and click on right checkboxes and enjoy.

Download Live CD and run your computer from CD and report back. This is simple test in case you have hardware error, then you should have problems with that live cd too.

If you are only one on your computer then i do not see any problem with that to stop using such things. Run "seahorse", right click on default or login or whatever you have there and select change password, enter current password and do not enter anything for new password...

use this command in terminal and check if you have 3d acceleration enabled. maybe is this your problem.

glxinfo | grep render

my output is this:

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3870
GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_copy_depth_to_color

and wow works ok.

Mint - i love your way of work really. Ubuntu is ok too, but your menus, upgrade system... upload manager, great stuff really. Great ideas! Keep good work on, i can't imagine using linux and not being on Mint, really. :)
