Re: Enlarged Display? Panel missing.

Sorry about the wait, she tells me nothing appears when using the Akt+F2. I was kind of hoping to acquaint her with the CLI, guess Iĺl have to wait.

Sent her a DVD to re-install and will walk her through that via phone. Thanks for the help.

Enlarged Display? Panel missing.

Running LM14 Mate. Fujitsu Lifebook The Icons, home and files are missing. The Kicker panel is missing. Alt+F2 does not bring up a terminal, neither does Alt+F3. Normal background colors are present. Iḿ grasping at straws here trying to guess whatś wrong. Searches don´t bring up good solutions. The ...

wrong IP

My LM14 Mate 64-bit is mis-behaving. It is ignoring the DHCP from my router and using it's own settings for IP address. It doesn't matter if I set it to static either. After boot-up it just sets itself up as it was before, wrong. Something else too, the DNS server 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 c...

Re: Why is MATE being kept alive?

Mate has come a long way in the last year. It is intuitive, windows users feel right at home and it has everything right at your finger tips or mouse click. It's fast and productive which is a lot more than can be said for many other DEs. Mate is my preferred desktop and I hope it sticks around for ...

Re: New Windows 8 laptops

Every computer sold with windows counts as a MS purchase! See if you can't order a computer without windows installed or with Linux pre-installed! Try Newegg and Dell if Fry's won't deal. Fry's customer service sometimes do make deals if you get high enough up the food-chain.

Re: man, another failure with mint 14

Oh, this sux! I got LM14 mate installed all over the place as it had features better than 13 and wasn't having internet issues with the old version of FireFox that was killing many websites always trying to install adobe flash when it's already installed crap. Now I'm told LM14 is buggy and won't be...

Re: Linux Mint 14 MATE - Internet not working

Hi Gridharge, You see that little icon down in the lower right area of your kicker panel that looks kind of like two plugs? Right click on it and select connect to eth0. Anytime I've had this issue in the past, that has been the solution for me. Going from one place to another place seems to bring u...

Re: linuxmint 14/Libreoffice -- can't

FYI-- On 32-bit LM14 Mate, I have the same issue (can't set default folder), plus a little worse: all the hidden files are displayed in the /home/user directory when trying to open/save as files (and any other directory that may have hidden files). This is version 3.6.2.2 that I'm using. Saving file...

Re: How many Linux users are there, really?

DrHu,
Did you look at the reports? Linux users garnered 40% of last years market, and rivals Apple in use of the internet. Your 1-2% comment is laughable. Linux is a serious market share contender. Companies who ignore Linux are doing so at their own peril.

Re: How many Linux users are there, really?

When you try to install netflix a screen will pop-up saying you need windows, mac os or chrome os. So netflix already supports google, why not the rest of the Linux world?

Re: How many Linux users are there, really?

I been wondering what this 'steam & valve' has been about, thinks for enlightening me. I hear a lot of emotional hope and no firm decisions in this article, he hasn't even decided on what the product is yet. This could be a long way-off, a long time to wait for a fizzle. Been there, done that. Beta ...

Re: How many Linux users are there, really?

It appears that there may be as many Linux or more users than Apple users. In that case, why don't companies such as Netflix, give us Linux users a higher priority rather than the ignore button?

Re: How many Linux users are there, really?

You think that if LM is based on Ubuntu the counts may be skewed some? Or does LM definitely always show as LM?

How many Linux users are there, really?

This article is a few years old. http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2010/09/debunking-the-1-myth.html I think our numbers have increased since then. I used to travel a lot and would see Linux being used on airplanes, cafes, hot-spots and even restaurants. I see it more often now. I suspect Linux has a hig...

Re: Change super-user, how?

Karlchen, thanks for the help and sorry about the delay in getting back to this. Your commands work just fine, except they don't ditch the old guy and put in the new guy. They just change the password of the old guy. Also, when making a new administrator, in the users and groups gui, the new guy is ...

Re: Need help using Netflix

I was hoping someone with a little more knowhow would help you. The error user_xattr has something to do with your file system as best I can figure. Maybe you didn't mount a drive, or the netflix wants to use a drive and since silverlight is some bastardized MS code it wants samba, is samba installe...

Nice to hear someone has success. Am I guessing here that this is what you are talking about: http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2012/11/ppa ... p-app.html? You don't state where you found your solution, it would be nice to let all of us readers know where you got it.

Re: Linux Mint Editions –Testing for an Average User

Hey thanks Pat, I was just coming back to report a 'stumble-upon', myself. I still think there's a bug, but it's not as bad as I had thought. It's the cool & quiet feature or 'p-state' in bios that is causing the system to be slow. Once I turn it off, the system information reports proper speed and ...

Re: Linux Mint Editions –Testing for an Average User

FYI-- found something else. Just got virtualbox working running vista (BTW internet was a real PITA). The vista welcome screen says I have an Athlon 64 x2 5000+ running at 1.80Mhz. Remember the LM14 Control Center was reporting the same processor running at 1000Mhz. There's a bug, this processor sho...
