Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

the culprit probably not that lib. listbug tell me that newest libllvm on sid doesn't working well on radeon graphics. it should be fixed on next updates but if you can't wait you can try to use the old version testing. Package: libllvm3.4 Pin: release a=testing Pin-Priority: 1010 if you put this o...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

This morning's update to libdrm-radeon1 killed my GLX rendering and thus my Gnome desktop and GDM3. EDIT: reverting to previous version does not help. EDIT2: I pulled my Radeon 6450 and reverted to onboard Intel HD4000 and GLX is working again. So it is open source Radeon that was wrecked by the upd...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I decided enough was enough and installed a clean Debian Testing with Xfce, then dist-upgraded to Sid, added a few Minty bits then installed Gnome Shell 3.8 from Sid. It pulled in GDM3 3.8. System is fast and systemd causes no issue for me with GDM nor Synaptic - nor anything else so far. I think I ...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

When I use GDM my boot time is nearly a minute and Gnome Shell does not function correctly. That is GDM from experimental. I await updates to see if I can get GDM back, but for the moment all is well. I'm not sure why we are having such "mileage" differences with GDM3. Maybe there is a de...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

Wayne, I am using LightDM and Gnome Shell 3.12 and systemd from experimental. I load Samba as I need it for my home network. My boot time is accelerated by the SSD, but even with an HDD Samba does not really delay boot significantly. It is so fast it was a surprise the first time it booted. When I u...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I re-activated GDM3 and rebooted. I get the same error you get with Synaptic. CPUs running at 100% for one core and high usage for other three. It lasts for about 45 seconds then Synaptic starts normally and CPUs go back to idle. With GDM as my display manager I cannot use gksu, So Synaptic has to b...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

My libgtk-3 version is the same. My system has been damaged with a few too many dips into dependency hell. Once systemd and Gnome 3.12 slide down to testing I think a clean install might be in order. My GDM3 issues stem from dipping into experimental. Running lightdm is, so far, making things work w...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Autocrosser, I have an issue with GDM3 causing havoc. When using GDM my system takes ages to boot and will not shut down from the Gnome menu. Also Synaptic will not start from the Gnome menu and has to be started from a command line. And, yes, it takes some time to start. But, when I switch to light...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

Gene, mine was a pure Debian Sid system with no modifications. Experimental wanted to remove my xorg, so yours might not boot to x because of that. I went to experimental just to get the last few bits of Gnome 3.12, then disabled it and went back to Sid. Then did the Sid upgrade and it then installe...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

Hang on to your hats, Sid just dist-upgraded me to systemd. It works except for a strange 15 sec stop before going on to GDM3.

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I now have a working 3.12. The other biggy is Sid just converted me to systemd. It has some issue where it sits for about 15 seconds during the boot, but then it goes through to GDM3. I am just pleased to have it working, investigating the systemd issue can wait until tomorrow.

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

I mostly agree with Gene, Install LMDE and then eschew update packs in favor of just running "testing". It is never bleeding edge and mostly boringly stable. It is a good reliable work system. Or add Gnome 3.8 from testing. A daily "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upg...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

To use systemd you need to install one package # apt-get install systemd-sysv This will remove sysvinit-core and you will be using systemd rather than sysvinit and have a faster boot. But, as Gene says above, the Debian world is not quite ready yet. A dist-upgrade with the wrong packages can really ...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID)

Thanks Gene. Another piece of advice for those who choose this perilous path - always have Xfce4 installed. A basic Xfce setup uses very little disk space by modern standards and is very handy to have as a standby desktop. This scenario is the big issue with Gnome. Distros like Ubuntu Gnome can upda...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I should not have mentioned that my Gnome was boringly stable, because now it is crashing whenever I open certain apps. One is Gedit.

I might have to look further. I have tried removing the config files and going with the defaults. Next step is the Debian Bug tracker.

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Happy New Year To All!!! And a happy new year to you. Some of us still lurk here and still run Gnome. I am running Gnome 3.8 on Sid. It is boringly stable at the moment. I tried Arch and it was a very nice 3.10. Rock solid and fast. But, I am a heavy user of Google Chrome, Google Talk etc and Arch ...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

A lot of experimentation on multiple machines and it appears to be .desktop files created by Alacarte. Maybe the format changed? Still playing. Edit: I renamed /usr/share/applications, created a new blank user and /usr/share/applications, then systematically re-instated each .desktop file. In the en...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

If it is still a problem, try apt-get install lightdm and accept lightdm as the default, then reboot. If the problem is related to xorg then that will not help. All the Gnome stuff is transitioning to 3.8. Try and get your Xfce back running then you can clean up Gnome update issues. Reading the Debi...

/home/"user"/.config/menus--to /menus.bak Created a blank folder menus & then used Menu Editor to return to Defaults. Edited the new gnome-applications.menu to only have the items I wanted--make sure to exclude "Other" I now have a working Menu that is not crashing.... Also ...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I was having the same problem & rebuilt my menu to "fix" it...don't know if that will help your problem....... Thanks, the menu is obviously the problem, even in classic mode if you play with the menu Gnome crashes. How did you rebuild the menu? Edit: I am fixed. I played with dconf-e...
