Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Gnome-Shell 3.8 is now in Sid. Tweaktool has not yet been updated but will now doubt transition soon. You can manually install tweak tool 3.8 from experimental as it is only one small file. But - it has a bug, at least on my machine. Every time I try to open Applications All the shell crashes. I tri...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

I am using VLC 2.08. If I right click on a video file and play with VLC it opens and runs almost instantly. My system runs on an OCZ 256Gb SSD. My only suggestion is to un-install VLC and delete the config files from ~/.local and ~/.config then re-install and run it once and answer the questions aga...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

Not sure the impact, and I usually play media file over network shared drive. Just hold on to see how others are doing on these bugs. Wayne, I have done the update with no consequences so far. If I leave a USB drive plugged in it auto mounts on boot up. I can browse my SAMBA network and play back v...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

@Spec-chum

It is the update to Perl that is causing issues. I just manually installed the other updates. You are correct it is time to be patient.

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Update on 5-6 July has made Gnome Shell unstable. My version is 3.8.3. I have closed experimental off, but might have to go back in or do some downgrades. Thank goodness for Xfce as a backup. :( Edit: July 9th and I have descended into dependency hell. I have had to remove all of Gnome and I am now ...

Is it just some arch's ? I do not use mono myself, but if you are keen ..... https://www.meebey.net/...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

(I'll note I'm using gdm3 version 3.6.1-2 from Experimental.) My gdm3 has a strange issue of being "busy" on startup. I cannot just press enter on my username and put in password, I have to click on usename with the mouse circular busy pointer then type in password. It then takes several ...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

Two more thoughts 1 I have no idea if this will work, but give it a try. Create a symlink from lib32asound2 to libasound2:i386. On an AMD64 system running multi-arch in the root tree you will find /lib and /lib64 - so find libasound2:i386 and create a symlink to /lib/i386-linux-gnu/lib32asound2. If ...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

@woodsman4 Did you add the sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 ? Ubuntu have been multi-arch for nearly two years so Crossover should have multi-arch figured out by now. You should not have to fiddle the dependencies, theoretically it would cause more problems that it might solve. The wonders of Googl...

Re: LMDE Breakages (Tracking SID) May 7, 2013

ia32-crossover doesnt install in sid because it depends on lib32asound2, which is no longer in sid and conflicts/is replaced by libasound2:i386 Hi, I have no direct experience with your problem but it is obviously due to Debian now being multi-arch. My guess would be you need to activate i386 as an...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I have a need for the euro symbol even though my country uses dollars. The latest Gnome Shell 3.8 settings take away the ability to edit the keyboard layout. It took me a while to solve this issue so I thought I would post it for my fellow Gnomes. Firstly the functionality for altering the keyboard ...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

The updates to Shell 3.8 are hitting Sid. The first package gnome-themes-standard breaks. The solution is to create a folder called "default" in usr/share/icons and then do the update again. I have 3.8 from experimental running cleanly with no dependency issues. Edit: Two days later and an...

Re: kernel 3.8

Separate subject: Kernel 3.8 kubuntu/netrunner have lots of kernel panic on their default 3.8.0-19/2x kernel. xubuntu, still similar to last few release, always busy asking me to send crash report. I have read that 3.8 kernel oops are a plague in Ubuntu land, particularly Xubuntu. I cannot confirm,...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

If you are sick of the constant battles to keep Alacarte running (and mine is broken again) then try this https://launchpad.net/menulibre It is written for Ubuntu but there is nothing Ubuntu specific about it. It installs in opt, and I had to use itself to fix up the menu item for it, but now it is ...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I had reason to reinstall a clean Wheezy system this week on my notebook. It is interesting to look at what the Debian devs have done. It is Gnome 3.4, with modifications. There is a gnome-shell-extensions package supplying a list of popular extensions, including the theme manager. Some of those ext...

Agreed on the "there just needs to be a mechanism for updating" I have been thinking about that--pity that the updater you were talking about (I used it also until it broke) is not working..that is what is really needed right now.If I knew more code I would take it on...... I guess that I...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I've found that "normally" most extensions will work with a newer version by just editing the metadata.json ...the file states not to edit it, but I've not had many problems with that (once or twice I locked up shell, but logging in as another user & then going into my user as root to...
