Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Some random thoughts on Gnome Shell 3.8. The system just keeps getting better, but I do long for some stability. As bimsebasse said it is a pain removing and re-installing extensions and themes for every update. Hopefully Gnome will settle down to a relatively unchanging layout and extensions and th...

Re: Media player processes that can't be killed.

It is a bug in gvfs and Samba that is plaguing all network media streaming on Ubuntu and derivatives. There is no solution at the moment other than to roll back to an older system.

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Lots of interesting info here on the new Classic Mode to be introduced in Gnome 3.8: Looks like they added Frippery to Gnome and called it Classic. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I still use a classic window switcher (Window List), but on the top bar. I am no longer a fan of an extra t...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

It's not live yet, but an unofficial supplement to extensions.gnome.org has been put together - details and info here: http://worldofgnome.org/ilovegnome-gnome3-theme-service-preview/ Looks like a good idea. Gnome 3 has always lacked a simple "Get more themes" button. At least this will g...

Reading the bug report the person is running a 3.8 kernel. I am running 3.7 from Experimental and I do not get the error.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

I thought that my new SSD was the problem at first..drove me crazy until I found the bug report.... I wrote this a while back, when I got my first SSD. Might have some interest. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=76921 I now have just one 256gb OCZ Vertex 4 in my desktop and on 256gb...

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jan 2, 2013

Mine has cleared with normal updates. The only package I now have held is gir1.2-telepathylogger-0.2, which is part of my Gnome-Shell 3.6 install.

A holiday flurry of activity in Sid.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jan 2, 2013

These days I generally only use "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" for updates. Apt has been holding back libqtdbus4 all on it's own, and still is.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

would that tend to be the most recommended kernel to go with or are there some others I should look into? Just my usage. I run 3.6.9-1 from experimental and it is good. I have run Liquorix and had no issues with the kernel, but I have issues with the Liquorix repository. The problem is when you use...

Hi Gene,

I think i see the issue with the Mayans. They were clearly using a 32bit calendar.

My 64bit Sid is also so stable it is boring. The Wheezy freeze helps with that by slowing everything down.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

I have a lot of confidence in Debian - they have 1000s of people contributing, and one of those people must be able to create a fairly easy way. They'll probably document it well, too. Yeah, it will not be an issue for Wheezy and it will be ancient history by the time Jessie is released. Just somet...

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

Hi guys. Do we see an apocalypse coming? They have dropped i386 from the new kernels and from gcc (I think). So, very soon i386 for Debian will have to become i686. Those of us with Multi-arch will have fun removing an arch and adding a new one and reinstalling all the 32 bit stuff. Then there is th...

That is a problem with Google Sync at the Google end and should be fixed by now.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

Thank you Gene, I'll have to think about it this week and I'll probably reinstall over thanksgiving break (right now I'm thinking about Sid Xfce and Testing w/ apt-pinning Cinnamon). If I need anymore help I'll open a separate thread. I guess I won't be able to get a good gauge of cinnamon's stabil...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

You may want to take a look at the default theme's code to see what other changes you'll need to make to the theme aside from increasing the message tray and summary mode heights. If I recall, all of the #notification sections were replaced with .notification instead, as well as most of the #summar...

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jul 19th

Dan It might be heresy around here, but if you avoid Cinnamon and Mate and Compiz, then you can run Gnome/KDE/Xfce simultaneously. If you avoid Compiz and thus desktop effects in Mate (maybe Cinnamon I have not used it for a while) then you probably could run the lot. I have Gnome 3.6, Xfce 4.10 and...

3.6 Update Gnome 3.6 is fast becoming complete in Experimental. Mine is working well and stable. I now have Nautilus 3.6 installed as well. I have two issues outstanding. Firstly Evolution will not install, which is not a big deal for me, but might be for some users. Secondly, my notification area i...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

I downgraded gnome-desktop3-data to 3.4 and then I was able to get nautilus 3.4 reinstalled. So much of the system relies on nautilus it has to be there in one version or another. I then edited /usr/share/gnome/gnome-version.xml to read 3.6.1 and now System Settings reports the correct version. I ha...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Well, I'm also on 3.6--the only "real" problem I'm having is that GDM has defaulted to the stock Debian look---I've already barfed my install once trying to get the "stock" Gnome3 GDM look..(removing desktop-base & then removing & reinstalling Gnome-Shell, Session & ...
