Re: How important is a fast hard drive, beyond basic 7200 rp

With 8GB of RAM, I doubt you could really notice much difference in real life. The magazine reviews will state differently, but they need to for advertising dollars. One way to get a feel for it, is to load the programs the way you usually do, then notice how often the hard drive light is flashing w...

Re: Search and Launch Desktop

That seems to work on other panels within KDE, but not on this particular desktop view.

Search and Launch Desktop

I just installed the LM 10 KDE release candidate last night. Nice work. No glitches. While I was exploring what's changed, I stumbled upon the Desktop option called "Search and Launch". I like that option, but would like to move the location from the middle of the screen, to perhaps the bottom area....

Linux Mint 9 KDE vs Linux Mint 10 Gnome

I'm just a little curious. I have the KDE version of Linux Mint installed, which from what I can tell is a previous version of Linux Mint, version 9. I was thinking originally, it was version 9 of the KDE desktop but with the same kernel but just different desktop interfaces. It seems like I was pro...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

+1 to Sleven's comments. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=41992&p=372155+#p372155 I started out with DOS 3.0. I put together a IBM XT clone and when I had plugged it in, I asked my wife (who supposedly knew something about computers) what to do next. She said to type "DIR", so I did....

Re: Does Windows Update Cause Problems?

Thanks for the responses! :) I got a kick out of that comment regarding if it was a "Dell Studio 15 or 17 system". I'm guessing this is not as nice as those. It is a simple Gateway 503GR desktop bought just when the P4-3.0 GHz systems with hyperthreading were coming out. Hot machine at the tim...

Does Windows Update Cause Problems?

I recently installed Ubuntu, then installed the KDE desktop so I guess it became Kubuntu? Things seemed to work great for about a week or so, then I needed to boot into the WinXP partition on the same hard drive. Windows did an update of its files and Norton updated the virus software. All ran fine ...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I have to admit that I didn't read every post in this thread (yet) but enough to get the idea, and in doing so finding out that at least I am not alone. ... Like ferguj1, I haven't read the entire thread...it's 19 pages now, and I'm at work...so I should be working instead. With that said, what I'v...
