Re: Standard account vs Admin account? No difference?

I should have specified I am using Cinnamon. Apologies. I have been on this forum long enough to know better! Got it set the way I want it now. It has always struck me as strange that Cinnamon does not automatically block access to one account's folders and files from another account but perhaps the...

Re: Standard account vs Admin account? No difference? Solved

On 17.3 now and the "Others" tab no longer exists. So can anyone tell me how to change the guest account so it can't see folders in my main account? Or how to set the Home folders in my account to private? Seems like it should be relatively simple but I can't work it out. Edit. I think I got it. Cli...

PPTP VPN option gone (Solved)

My PPTP connection to my Synology server stopped working after upgrading to 17.2. Deleting it and trying to add it again brings up an "Import from file" message. This is the message I would expect to see when trying to set up Open VPN or import a cert for a Cisco VPN. PPTP needs no file. I know this...

Re: NFS and synology shares.

Not quite sure what you are asking but if you open nautilus (files) there is an option in there somewhere to connect to a server. Open that and enter the details of your NAS, ip address, password etc and then connect to it. Once it has connected you should be able to add a bookmark to each of the di...

Re: Auto login...boots straight to guest account

Got it fixed following the instructions on this page. http://www.webupd8.org/2012/06/how-to-use-lightdm-instead-of-mdm-in.html Only difference was using Nano and having to copy and paste [SeatDefaults] greeter-session=unity-greeter user-session=cinnamon allow-guest=false into the lightdm.conf file. ...

Tried that as well. Does the same...simply logs straight back into guest with no option to choose another account.

Re: Auto login...boots straight to guest account

But I can't open any admin settings in the guest account including Menu - Admin- Login Window. All of those settings have been disabled as the guest account does not have the proper permissions to open them. And I can't give it the proper permissions as I can't open any of the admin settings! Ergo.....

(Solved) Auto login...boots straight to guest account

Hi I enabled the guest account on my system yesterday and completely forgot about auto login. Now my system boots straight to the guest account and for the life of me I can't see a way back into my account. System settings are disabled for guest so no way to change it there. Using Ctrl-Alt-F2 I can ...

Re: How do I figure out what IP addresses I've used? DHCP

You could try adding a DDNS address to your router if it supports it and pointing GoDaddy's VPN at that. The DDNS address wouldn't change and would automatically update each time your external address was changed by your ISP. There are many companies offering this both paid and free. I use a Synolog...

Re: Unopenable drives in 'Computer'

File system is your SSD, at least it is on my systems. You should be able to open your backup disc though, right click on it and check the permissions.

Re: Install linux on 1 pc and use on another pc

As for remotely fixing/checking the laptop after you have left use Teamviewer. Install Teamviewer on your own machine, set it up so you have an account with username, password etc and then set the same account on her machine. You can also set it to start with the system on bootup if you want. Also C...

Re: Cinnamon crashes on certain webpages

I have a very similar problem. For me it seems to have something to do with either trying to get to the Google Chrome download page through Firefox or Chrome itself when trying to get to the Chrome add on store.

Re: Cinnamon crashing and turning off screen

So I installed MATE and have exactly the same problem. Open Firefox and the system freezes and then turns off the monitor. So not Cinnamon then but what is causing this is beyond me!

Uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled. Now it seems to be working ok. But it is now doing the same in Chrome.

Cinnamon crashing and turning off screen

I have spent the last few hours updating three family laptops to Mint 17, all with a clean install. Two Dells and a Toshiba. Both Dells are the same model. Cinnamon will crash on start-up on the Toshiba on occasion but it is rare and is solved with a quick reboot. However on one of the Dells the pro...

Re: Qiana x64 Machines Locked Out of TWC Wifi Modem After...

I would install a router between the modem and the laptops. The laptops then would connect to the router using DHCP and and the router would be hard wired to the modem. You may need to disable DHCP on the modem if it provides it. This would I think also improve your security as the laptops would no ...

Standard account vs Admin account? No difference?

I have just installed Prey on my travelling laptop which runs Mint 17. Prey for those who don't know is a tracking program which if the laptop is stolen sends reports back to me with the thief's details including webcam pics and location. Very handy. But obviously it will only work if the thief can ...

Yeah, I know this is the look from Australis and not really copied from Chrome. Anyway, I went here http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2824649 Installed the Classic Theme Restorer addon at the bottom of the page, reinstalled Titlebar Plus addon and everything is back to very close to...

Firefox 29...just me?

Anybody else had a nasty shock upgrading to Firefox 29? Looks like a Google Chrome clone! Hide CaptionTitlebar Plus addon no longer works so no way to get rid of the large expanse of blank grey toolbar taking up valuable space on my 12 inch notebook. Not much definition between tabs and the writing ...

Re: Share Folder Problem Yet Again... (Samba?)

No idea if it will work but I am using smb4 in Mint KDE 15 as Dolphin was a pain when trying to view pics on my synology server and it works fine. It may install in normal Mint? I have also changed my conf file as per my post in this thread. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=150&t=18496&st...
