Demi Lovato Linux

If you liked Hannah Montana Linux, you'll also enjoy Demi Lovato Linux (http://demilovato.sourceforge.net/), which is based on Ubuntu with GNOME3.

Re: How do I disable GNOME?

Swift Linux will feature IceWM and ROX pinboard as a replacement for GNOME. GNOME has its merits, but being lightweight isn't one of them. Swift Linux needs to fit onto a CD and be as easy on RAM as Puppy Linux and antiX Linux. When it's ready for release, Swift Linux will offer the merits of Linux ...

How do I disable GNOME?

I'm working on the new Swift Linux, which will be a lightweight distro based on LMDE. It's analogous to antiX Linux, a lightweight distro based on MEPIS. I've removed the GDM login manager and replaced it with the SLiM login manager. I've changed the /etc/slim.conf file and replaced the various sess...

When will the next releases of LMDE be available?

It would be nice to have new ISOs that include Update Pack 3. It seems that since the first official release of LMDE in September, the monthly releases have stopped. Does anyone know when the next release will be made? Then again, given the challenges of dealing with GNOME3 and MATE, I suppose I sho...

Obtaining the username in a root script

When you're the root user in a shell, what is the command to obtain your regular username? I'm working scripts that need to obtain the regular username but must be executed as root. I've found that "echo $USERNAME" works initially. However, I find that after I run the script, "echo $U...

GNOME 2 vs. other DEs

Why do you like GNOME 2 so much better than other DEs like Xfce, LXDE, and ROX pinboard? I haven't tried GNOME 3 yet. I tried Unity, and I hated it. No wonder Linux Mint and other prominent distros are distancing themselves from Unity. I think the Xfce in Linux Mint is just as good as GNOME 2, excep...

Re: LMDE updates

How do I install Update Pack 3? I upgraded mintupdate-debian from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 as directed by the Update Manager. Is the long list of updates Update Pack 3, or do I have to manually do all the things listed in Update Pack 3?

LMDE updates

I have a confession: I've never before bothered updating my OS. I need to change this. So now is my time to start. In LMDE (the September 2011 release), I updated the repositories as instructed by Update Pack 3. The update manager shows a list of 416 updates. Just how important and how risky are eac...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

I'm the founder and lead developer of the lightweight Linux distro Swift Linux. I find it ironic that a few of you think LMDE should be based on antiX/MEPIS at a time when I'm switching Swift Linux from an antiX/MEPIS base to an LMDE base. MEPIS Linux is good, but LMDE is much better. antiX/MEPIS do...

Re: LinuxMint Number 1 on Distrowatch

Linux Mint has now dethroned Ubuntu for the #1 spot in the 12-month count. I think the announcement of the new release candidate of Mint 12 was just enough to boost Mint to the #1 spot. In the short run, the announcement of the official release of Mint 12 will pad Mint's margin over Ubuntu. Given th...

Re: Ubuntu catching up to Windows

I'm not sure if Compiz was running in Ubuntu, Ubuntu-based Mint, or LMDE. I'm not sure what factors cause the Ubuntu bloat. I don't give a hoot about those fancy Compiz effects - I just want the user interface to be easy to work with. The latest version of Windows I have substantial experience with ...

Ubuntu catching up to Windows

When people rant about the new Ubuntu, it's all about the new Unity interface. I haven't tried Unity, because it doesn't work for me in VirtualBox, so I've only seen the new Ubuntu with the backup GNOME setup. What I notice the most is the bloat. Even with 2 GB of RAM, Ubuntu feels sluggish even tho...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

I'm surprised that there are over twice as many votes for Mint as its own distro as there were for following Ubuntu. I can't imagine how Mint can be an independent distro given how much hard work it has taken the team to roll out Debian Edition. Very few people have the ability to create an alternat...

Re: Old PC

The Debian Editions are much lighter than the Ubuntu-based editions, yet look and feel very similar. LMDE with GNOME feels faster with only 512 MB of RAM than the Ubuntu-based editions feel with 2 GB of RAM. While LMDE won't fit onto a CD, a USB drive is cheaper than a RAM upgrade and doesn't requir...

Re: Linux Mint could take the world by storm

I think there's an unprecedented opportunity today for the lightweight desktop environments and window managers. Linux Mint implements LXDE very well. I think the Puppy Linux menu and desktop sets the standard - I like it even better than the Mint menu and desktop. The Puppy Linux user interface is ...

Re: Linux Mint could take the world by storm

My problem with Unity is that I haven't been able to get it to work in VirtualBox or on my laptop. Thus, I've only seen the new Ubuntu with GNOME. What's most noticeable about the new Ubuntu is its bloat - noticably heavier than the old Ubuntu LTS and its Linux Mint 9 derivative. LMDE with GNOME fee...

Re: Lightweight LXDE

I recommend LMDE with GNOME. (There is an Xfce version, but Thunar 1.2.2 has a lag problem.) Because LMDE bypasses the heavy overhead of Ubuntu, it's surprisingly fast even with GNOME. In fact, LMDE with 512 MB of RAM feels faster than Ubuntu 11.xx or its Mint derivatives with 2 GB of RAM. LMDE isn'...

Re: Windows 7 Surpasses XP In Usage

How long did it take each of the predecessors (XP, 98, 95) to become the most widely used Windows OS? I know that Vista and ME never got there.

Windows 7 looks good compared to Vista. Of course, any car looks good compared to a Yugo, so that's not saying much.

Linux Mint could take the world by storm

As we know, Linux Mint has taken #1 spot from Ubuntu on DistroWatch at the 6-month level and is closing in on Ubuntu at the 12-month level. I think Linux Mint has the potential to really take the world by storm over the coming years for these reasons: 1. Ubuntu's new Unity interface has been driving...
