Re: Video software

To edit out the editors info it will be pretty much the same in any editor. Just cut that part off. You cannot remove just the text from the video under it. It is now all part of the same video. You can grab a frame of video just before his text starts, save that as a jpg, png etc and use it as a ba...

Re: Mint users on Ubuntu forums

FWIW, I've perused the ubuntu forums but have not interacted over there. Mint is my first real Linux experiment (save for a flirt with Freespire dual boot a number of years ago). I did however install another OS, had a few issues and joined their forum, posted a question or two and got some helpful ...

Re: As bad as windows is, ready to go back.

..I personally got banned from the windows 7 forum for nothing to be honest and the moderator decided to ban me from the windows 8 forum as well, I now HATE windows and Microsoft.. Maybe you had been trolling too much there, son? http://www.bildites.lv/images/clq5ljpw8wzev4j204qx.jpg That is truly ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

A bit of research today and some interesting finds, yet no solution. Frst I ran a Live CD of CrunchBang, and shortly after boot the fan kicked on and the cpu was a 600mhs (fortunately crunchbang includes the Broadcom wireless driver so I was able to sluggishly install cpufrequtils..) I also poked ar...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

did a bit of poking around and the cpu and gpu temps seem about normal... System has been up about an hour CPU 42C GPU 67C THM 42C I had added the i8k force=1 to the /etc/modules and that started the fan immediately upon start up until Gkrellm took over and controlled via temp and slowed them down. ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Okay, I walked away for a bit... cpufrequtils was uninstalled, I had the CPU Freq monitor in the panel... duh! So I reinstalled cpufrequtils... I can use cpufreq-set to set the various levels, but should they not have already been set by the cpu itself, cpufreq-info shows the various governors, and ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

I gotta quit... I'm totally confused. I used Synaptic and removed, and then completely removed cpufrequtils, cpufreqd, libcpufreq0 have rebooted, removed them via get-apt remove as well, which tells me they are not there, yet.... when I reboot, there it is sitting in the panel. I swear this laptop i...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

almost there. things are loading and fans are working but....cpu scaling is whacked. upon boot it's 1.8 gHz, then immediately forced down to 600 and "current policy: frequency should be between 600 mhz and 600 mhz." seems I'm about back where I started long ago.... something is pushing it down, but ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

GOT IT!!! checked that ubuntu thread and followed a link to another changed it to i8k force=1 in the /etc/modules file and Gkrellm fired up with the fan controls in place. now to see if I can figure out why it still won't play videos properly and forces the cpu to 600 mhz and stays there. I have cpu...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

sorry, losing clarity. ;-) apparently the modprobe i8k in /etc/modules isn't working. I get i8kmon to start, and gkrellm (syntax error on my part) but I still have the missing proc/i8k error code. I thought also when i first installed and ran gkrellm it was reading the cpu temp, it is no longer, jus...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

I'll give that a shot. (how do I add it?) All is not as it should be, yet. I stopped for a bite on the way to work and fired it up wifi.... Gkrellm didn't auto start like I thought I told it to...LOL had to run the modprobe then the fans worked, I have cpufreq running, but tried a youtube vid and BA...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

thanks, I upgraded to 2.6.35-28 the sudo modprobe gets it working, though a bit inelegant as I have to keep the Terminal open or it shuts down the app. but right now I really need to get to work LOL Is there a way to make it run automatically?downloaded and installed the Gkrellm-i8k plugin, it seems...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

okay, got LM10 Julia back on the system, installed i8kutils, cpufrequtils and Gkrellm. Unfortunately i8kmon will run but not allow me to control the fans because it says proc/i8k is missing. According to the I8k site that means the kernal is not properly compiled, which is kinda greek to me. It work...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

did that, same thing. Grub has two choices for each kernal, if I boot into the new one I get a black screen and then terminal. I have to hard re-start, and watching the code I see it shutting down i8kmon. which I cannot get to properly run if I boot into the original kermal because of the missing pr...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

PCLOS is gone, I got Isadora xfce installed, and it's working, but cannot seem to find the GKrellm i8k plug in in Synaptic or the cpu temp plug in. I installed i8kutils and the way I understood it, i8kutils included the Gkrellm plug-in, but for some reason i8kmon is not working in xfce, it's looking...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

stayed up far too late last night messing up the laptop. LOL tried installing LM 10 main over pclos, but it would only take the 30 gb partition I had for WinXp and split that in half, deleted partitions, screwed up grub, formatted, tried installing Julia but the fan issue with this laptop kicks in a...
