Re: What's the Official Way to Link to Mint?

Jesse,,, from what I've read I believe you're correct, the search engines look for anchor text, and that has an effect on the SEO rankings. So I believe the text link is better in that respect, You could also use the logo as a link in addition to the text, which would give the viewer a visual refere...

Re: Installing Broadcom Driver

You could install onto a USB drive and then boot from that? (which I think is what Zero Prime said too) if your bios would cooperate with the USB boot, that way you could set it up how you want it, and it would be that way next time you booted. BTW, I've had a Roku box for more than a year and LOVE ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

 I'll update when something happens. Probably not til late this weekend. My wife has launched a business and we have our first show tomorrow, so it's an early call. I'm her second in command (and that's different from???) tech support, hard labor all that. This has been a fun learning experien...

Re: Typing on laptop moves to mouse position

IIRC to disable the stick I had to download something from Dell, but that was on my wife's laptop under XP. not sure if you would need the same thing to change the touchpad.

Re: Typing on laptop moves to mouse position

on my Dell laptop under XP I found it was the pointer stick in the keyboard that needed to be disabled, sometimes it gets jarred by the other keys. YMMV. give both (one at a time) a shot and see what works for you.

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

UPDATE: busy busy time (birthdays etc) anyway under XP I installed i8kfangui and it works like a charm, fans controlled by temp everything is cool (though I still want to crack open the case, replace thermal paste and check the GPU heatsink) I installed PCLOS as a dual boot, and cannot get the Gkrel...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

no I haven't , I'm very careful with my gear. Actually this wasn't really a drop, it was about an inch from the floor when it slipped, so it wasn't much of a thud either. Just another weird episode with this thing.

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Kinda sounds like doorstop material to me ... But before you do give it a throw I would check if the heat sinks are still in their correct place , seems to me I remember something about a laptop that had been "abused" and the heatsink had shifted just enough to leave the CPU without adequate coolin...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Haven't had time to crack the case open, but under Windows I installed SpeedFan whch shows me the temps, which get a bit warm but what's odd is it shows no sensors (as did lmsensors) not sure what that means. But at times the fan kicks on and things slow down and the temps are in teh 35C range. and ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Well, I just spent a couple hours, wiping the HDD and installing XP, had to use another pc to download the drivers for video, wireless, sound (not on the dell provided CD??) anyway, problem persists. Although I cannot as easily monitor temp and cpu as I could in Mint, watched a youtube video and fan...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

good idea, I don't have a spare HDD but will put XP back on and see what happens. Ididn't have time last night but I had it running, watching the Gkrellm and temps while I went to play a youtube video... temps stayed fine, fan kicked on cpu up to 98-100% even when I stopped the vid and it had stoppe...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

UPDATE: I installed Gkrellm last night, still using Mint main edition, and configured it to show the CPU and GPU temps. Well I noticed the GPU temp was much higher than the CPU. This morning before I went to work I checked email etc, and noticed while both the CPU and GPU started at the same temp, i...

Re: Linux Video Editor - Why no good program?

I've a video producer by choice and by trade. I edit on Avid at work and Magix Video ProX and sometimes Vegas for my side business. Just recently installed Mint on my laptop which I purchased to use as a teleprompter and figured I would "experiment" a bit. I had heard about Cinelerra a while back bu...

Beardedragon wrote:Omegaman, in Synaptic search xfce4 and install xrfce4-sensors-plugin to get your temp working. I use gkrellm and add the temp sensor for that as a constant system monitor it is easier to configure than Conky.

Thanks I'll give that a shot.

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

In the on-going saga. was going to install Xfce last night, but that fan kept kicking on and slowing things to a crawl. in Xfce I could see cpu usuage, but not temp. Not that I think that matters, since the temp is usually reported well within the normal range. Once the fan kicks on even if it pushe...

Re: Wireless Connections - Why so difficult in Linux?

I dunno, I'm a Linux newbie and the wireless set up was almost identical to what I had to do with XP on my wife's machine, except there I had to go to Dell's site, find the right program, download it and install it before the wireless would work. Here I had to click on additional hardware drivers, i...

Re: Wireless Connections - Why so difficult in Linux?

If you are having issues with it seeing your home network, check to see if your home network is broadcasting SSID, if it isn't you have two options. !. set it to broadcast 2, on the network icon click connect to hidden network, fill in the info, SSID, WEP etc and you should be good to go.

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

last night I set the CPU at 1 Ghz and was able to play some videos with better, though not perfect, resolution. I guess it will just have to be that way. The machine does what I need it to do, though not perfectly, and I think it's more a hardware issue than software. I want to thank everyone for th...

Re: What makes you want to try Linux in the first place?

picked up a used laptop to use as a teleprompter (using the web browser) it was a bit sluggish, so I figured it's not a misson critical machine so why not? having some issues with the CPU, but that may be a hardware problem but the OS (Mint Main) works fine. I've thought about trying it for a while,...
