Re: Unofficial Linux Mint LXDE 13 RC1 released!

Great, the Mint 13 LXDE edition was missed by some ! I tested your RC1 release in Virtualbox, here is some feedback from my first day with your RC1: - The autologin option in the installer doesn't work. Didn't test the "Encrypt my home folder" option. - In the Live boot menu your Mint title is to lo...

Re: Sound scheme and memory problem.

Mint 14 already uses the pae kernel by default, no need to install. There are many ways to check the amount of RAM on your system, you can use grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo or sudo lshw -short or inxi -I etc. If you have a graphic card with shared RAM you will have less RAM available for the linux ker...

Re: Which Mint version, 32 or 64bit - Intel B970

The maximum long signed integer possible in 32bits, which is (2^(32-1))-1, or 4294967296 unsigned, also known as unsigned int long max. That's why each process can only use up to 4GB of RAM. Do you know PAE increases the 32bit physical address size from 32 bits to 36? x86 processor hardware-archite...

Re: Installing LMDE on BTRFS with lzo compression, almost

You could test which is better for, it depends on the CPU and HDD/SDD performance. One uses lzo the other zlib (-3) so you could try to isolate compression by using lzop and gzip in a tmpfs and compare the result with your disk performance. Would be nice to be able to select other compressions level...

Re: Which Mint version, 32 or 64bit - Intel B970

As for "32bit support has been ripped out of the newer kernels", that is a misunderstanding on TehGhodTrole's part. it's a big misunderstanding for someone that is giving advice on 32bit Vs. 64bit and was not the only one. Nunol, you might be living in the past here. Why? Because I like to give the...

Re: Which Mint version, 32 or 64bit - Intel B970

Don't be fooled by the word 'recognised'. While a PAE kernel will recognise >4GB, no 32bit application can make use of >4GB. The 4GB limit in 32bits still applies. The 32bit limit is 4GB per process and not per application. That means a application with more than one process can use more than 4GB. ...

Re: Which Mint version, 32 or 64bit - Intel B970

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if you install a straight 32 bit OS and later add more ram, it won't all be recognized, that 4 Gb limit, unless you install a PAE 32 bit version. Mint 14 32bit only has the i686-pae kernel, supports up to 64GB of RAM so you are not going to have that problem. M...

Re: Upcoming Kernel Changes in 3.8

Yes, many good changes.

The best for me it's the new lzo that they say it's about 2x faster both for compression and decompression. Gives better performance for zram, BTRFS and every thing else that uses lzo.

Re: Mint 14 System Requirements

Mint 14 doesn't have the "official" LXDE edition but you can install Mint 14 XFCE and install LXDE on top. The requirements are the same as Mint 14 XFCE. The same is true if you install LXDE on top of any other Mint edition. If you can't install any Mint 14 or 13 edition try installing Mint 12 LXDE ...

Re: Which Mint version, 32 or 64bit - Intel B970

Your machine is a 64bit system, so why would you want to run a 32bit OS? Why not? Basic tasks, such as email, Internet and office apps don't need or require one or the other and Wine for 64-bit actually runs in 32-bit mode . In this case, with the information provided by the user I don't see any bi...

Re: Mint 11 EOL, why am I still getting updates?

Your Mint 11 installation may remain functional but it's recommended to install a current Mint edition: - Mint 13 LTS, support until 2017 - Mint 14, support until April 2014 - LMDE - Etc Ubuntu and Mint don't provide updates for that system anymore but some software may come from others and receive ...

Re: Re-Using old laptop [Almost Solved]

Slitaz is good but not really a full size distro like Mint, it's closer to Puppy.

If you can't use Plop you are limited to CD size distros. Some utility distros have Plop in the boot menu, you could try one. I use Parted Magic that has Plop and other tools.

Re: Mint 14 on old laptop?

Plop also boots from the floppy, if you have a floppy. You don't give enough information about your system... With 512MB of RAM you have enough RAM to run any Mint edition but I would recommend something with XFCE or LXDE. MATE, Cinnamon and KDE use more RAM and CPU. Cinnamon also needs some 3D supp...

Re: How to make things go faster?

Yes, you should use a system monitor like "top" to see what is slowing down your computer. Some program/driver or misconfiguration could be causing the slow down. You could also check your sensors to see if the computer is overheating, etc. If you have a graphic driver issue try Mint with XFCE or LX...

Provavelmente não tens permissões para escrever, abre o gestor de ficheiros como root, ex: "gksu nemo" no Cinnamon. Se estas a usar outra edição troca o nome do gestor de ficheiro pelo correcto.

Re: Brand new to linux - need some help

There are several Mint editions that work well with 512MB of RAM. You could use Mint 12 LXDE, works well with 512MB of RAM but it's possible to improve that and you have the option to upgrade to Mint 13 with LXDE. LMDE XFCE 201204 is also light and fast but not as much as Mint 12 LXDE. Installing LX...
