Please walk me through how to blacklist Grub updates, ideally so it would apply to all future updates as well.
This terminal command should do it (fire and forget):

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark hold "*grub*"

It sounds rather crazy, and I'm certainly not going to test that.

In the end I want to avoid ordering a new hard drive beyond the limitations of what my system supports.
Check the support section of the website of your motherboard (or laptop) manufacturer, for the manual of your motherboard (or laptop). That information should be in it.

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04

Golden oldie summarized in two lines: Bottom line: most of the time when you use sudo for graphical applications, it's fine. Some of the time, though, it is not fine, and is, in fact, extremely bad. Interesting. In my 18 years of using one Linux distribution or another as my primary desktop OS, I'v...

Documentation is mainly being done by volunteers and third parties. I maintain a website for that purpose, myself:

You might take a look and see if it helps you to solve your current issues with Mint. :)

Re: gksu removed from the repo's of Ubuntu 18.04

I never understood why people used gksu when sudo exists. What do you like about it more? They accomplish the same thing, and sudo is much simpler since it is console based. Hopefully this'll help you understand: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/about-root.html Golden oldie with much mor...

OK. Very new hardware.

Try whether this helps:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel from the 4.18 series. Then reboot.

Re: Software Manager, Firefox (possibly more Mint Programs) not working after attempt to Upgrade GTK+

Mint 17.x will reach end of life in less than three months, so there's not much use in spending time and effort on troubleshooting.... I advise to do a clean installation of Mint 19.1. :)

Re: Has PlayOnLinux Died?

Do you still need to install a tax application in the USA, for filing your tax data to the IRS? In The Netherlands, the internal revenue service has created a cloud app for that, years ago... All you need for that is a web browser (any modern web browser).
