Re: Optimize SSD's for Longer Lifespan

The article it refers to is worth reading as well: http://rudd-o.com/en/linux-and-free-software/tales-from-responsivenessland-why-linux-feels-slow-and-how-to-fix-that He wrote 11 years ago Last modified five years ago, so that makes it less ancient.... , when the kernel's paging strategy was differ...

Re: Optimize SSD's for Longer Lifespan

That parameter does not define a free RAM percentage (check the kernel sources, that parameter is used as part of a number of formulas, but none of them are about what you claim). If you decrease this value you'll probably see less caching and thus have a good chance of more disk activity, both dep...

Re: [Solved] Weak wireless signal, tp-link usb network adapter (RTL8192EU chipset)

Good to hear! For future reference, this should be a cleaned-up list of the required commands: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/reserve-7#TOC-Realtek-RTL8192EU-chipset-2357:0109- (item 9, right column) I've tested it in a virtual machine with Mint 19 MATE (kernel 4.15.0-20) and it ...

Re: Weak wireless signal, tp-link usb network adapter

As Joe2Shoe says. Note that this may only work for the 4.15 kernel series, so first make sure that you boot from the latest 4.15 kernel, then remove the 4.18 kernel, and then apply Joe2Shoe's tip.

Re: Weak wireless signal, tp-link usb network adapter

Probably the RTL8192EU chipset. Strange, because I was under the impression that that particular chipset was well supported in the 4.15 kernel series. Try if it helps when you update your kernel to the latest one of the 4.15 series . You're now on -20, the latest is -38. This should be a regular lev...

This should give you the option to explicitly accept the name change:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

Re: Repository Update Problem - Google Earth <not so solved>

But do you still get updates for your Google stuff then, or has the Google repo simply been removed by your action (thus essentially leaving you in the cold with no security updates for all things Google)?

Re: [Solved]-Don't understand video codecs

But personally I do also prefer the Mint defaults - you can always use the --install-recommends parameter on a case by case basis, but generally I'm not interested in them. Just one example: installing chromium-browser without the recommends (Mint default), doesn't pull the Dutch translation for it...

Re: Question about Mint

Mint 19.1 will be based on the first point release of Ubuntu 18.04, namely 18.04.1. Furthermore, Mint 19.1 will contain some mint-only new stuff that won't ever land in Mint 19. As Damien already pointed out, 18.10 isn't long term supported (LTS). Mint only builds on the highest quality, namely Ubun...

Try the latest kernel of the 4.18 series, by means of the reliable Canonical Kernel Team PPA:

Re: Mint hangs at desktop

The reason that the live session failed to produce the inxi output, is probably caused by the full disk encryption that you've applied. Disk encryption, especially full disk encryption, is a thick layer of complexity that's known for creating issues in certain use cases. Try if it helps when you ins...

Re: Mint hangs at desktop

Boot from the Mint DVD (or USB stick) and generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Copy/paste this command into the terminal: inxi -Fxz (if you type: the let...

you are increasing your attack surface by having it installed and that's what you need to realize.
I would add: you are increasing your attack surface dramatically. For the rest: kudo's for your fine explanation. :)

Re: How to prevent external hard drive full of win malware, virus etc infecting my linux OS?

This is an internet myth. Funny, but it's fact according to Wine themselves: Is Wine malware-compatible? How good is Wine at sandboxing Windows apps? Indeed. The Wine devs are quite honest about it, as they should. Not only to prevent litigation, but also out of moral considerations. Kudo's to them...

Re: The Face of Linux Mint Support

If IRC is inevitably a jungle red in tooth and claw then warning new users off it seems a sensible path. A thick skin and growing some claws of your own helps as well, on IRC. The main disadvantage of IRC for me, is that it's too quick and imprecise. No time for composing a technically sound ...
