Re: GUI insists USB memory stick is write-protected...

Some interesting points, but none which help explain why Caja/the GUI reports a write-protected device, yet a terminal command to copy a file does not. I'm using MATE; does anyone using Cinnamon, or other editions of Mint (XFCE, KDE, LMDE), with their respective GUI's and file managers, have the sam...

Re: GUI insists USB memory stick is write-protected...

Thanks for the reply. By GUI I mean MATE, I'm on Mint 17. When I try to drag files across from one Caja tab to another - the destination, being the USB stick - I get the write protected message. I take your point that sticks don't last forever, but after getting the error, I copied the files across ...

GUI insists USB memory stick is write-protected...

... but I can copy files to it through the terminal. This and other USB oddities have been around in Mint for some years. It's all the more annoying because the GUI just let me format the damned stick, so how can it be write-protected? I'd previously used the USB image writer on the same stick to pu...

(Chuckle!) I'm glad it's not just me, then.

I don't have a solution, but just to '+1' your request. It's always that one time when you haven't checked that the dialog has focus...

Re: Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop - Puppy wo

Last guess and I am finished...that Pentium lacks some vital opcode used by newer kernels, so the load just falls over as soon as the kernel gets control. In that case, LMDE [uses a 486 kernel] will work, same as Puppy does. At first, I was confusing LMDE with LXDE , and wondered why a Desktop Envi...

Re: Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop - Puppy wo

Yes, that will wipe the isohybrid code...so now it won't boot as a USB image, only as an iso burned to an optical disk. Great, I shall get burning and report back... [Later] :( Still no joy. The disc will boot on the second PC (a desktop) just fine, but still won't boot on the troublesome laptop. I...

Re: Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop - Puppy wo

Another 'bump'! I have tried messing about with dd, but with no luck so far. Here's what I tried. I made a copy of the 32-bit ISO image, calling it mint.iso to shorten the command line. Noting from online sources that ISO disc images have a block size of 2048, I went with this: dd if=/dev/zero of=/h...

Re: Customized install for 400 laptops. (Remastering Mint)

I'll be interested to see how this goes; I'd like to slightly remaster Mint too, just to change a few things around. E.g. Open Office replaced by Abiword and Gnumeric, removing a few unused programs, etc. And also to make a CD-based Mint live, for use with less well-specced computers. I did this a c...

Re: Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop - Puppy wo

<BUMP> I'd be grateful if anyone could help with the syntax and procdure for the below, if indeed it's the right thing to do. I've just come back from hospital today, and would love to be Minty on a laptop, without having to struggle to where the desktop PC is. Mint is a bit grubby, post-patched usi...

Re: Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop - Puppy wo

Mint is a bit grubby, post-patched using the isolinux command to look like a hard drive, EFI drive blah blah. Older BIOS can go all wobbly faced with a hard-disk file system 'in' an optical medium. Just zero the first 32768 bytes of the Mint distribution file and it will be a real ISO again. Thanks...

Thanks for the reply, but the boot process hangs long before the boot menu appears. The next respondent looks to have a solution, though.

[Solved] Unable to boot any Mint version on old laptop

I have an old laptop that I wanted to use as a standby machine with Mint, but I haven't been able to boot a live disc of any version; I've tried 13, 16, and now 17. It is happy to boot and run Puppy, though. With a Mint disc, the laptop hangs, showing a black screen with a flashing cursor before I e...

Re: Canon Pixma MP610

Well, I haven't tested the printer yet, but I did get it to install. The add printer dialog gave a few choices, this time instead of choosing the first option (Canon MP610), I chose Gutenprint USB printer #1, then under 'Connection', 'canon: /dev/usb/lp0'. A couple more confirms, and it installed. I...

Re: Canon Pixma MP610

This won't help you, but I'm having problems installing a driver for my MP610, also running on Mint 16 RC. It half-worked first time, asking me for the root password to allow it to install Gutenprint, then seemed to hang half-way through. All subsequent attempts, even after rebooting, all fail too. ...

Re: [Solved] USB floppy driver

You aren't alone; I have a USB floppy drive too, that won't work in Mint 10. What's more annoying, though, is that it WORKED IN MINT 8! Something's changed between versions that renders several of my USB storage devices useless. And it's not only this floppy drive, but a 1GB USB stick, too, that wil...
