Re: Text editors that handle large files?

Gave Leafpad a try and it was an improvement over Xed. For one, it never crashed, even on 300 Mb files. However, it was still much slower than Geany if I needed to scroll to the bottom. Leafpad opens fast, but takes awhile to fully load all lines. Xed, on the other hand, completely hangs until all l...

Text editors that handle large files?

I am currently using Mint Mate 18, and Xed tends to choke on large text files (i.e. csv's over 100 megs). It is even slow on log files that are less than 20 MB. On the other hand, Geany opens them instantly. I am curious what it is that makes some text editors handle large files instantly, while oth...

Re: Mint 18 Mate does not shutdown

Appreciate the advice! I did find some weird things in the log after running sudo journalctl | grep shutdown. Lots of warnings like this: Feb 03 23:06:20 mintmate ureadahead[333]: ureadahead:shutdown.target.wants: Ignored relative path Reading up on it, I did not see it linked to shutdown problems. ...

Mint 18 Mate does not shutdown

My system reboots in just a few seconds, but shutdowns take like 10 or more minutes and lately there were times when it never shutdown. It is stuck on the Mint logo. I was wondering what the first steps are to troubleshoot this? I am on kernel 4.4.0-45. This is a desktop PC. Any help would be apprec...

Issue with tmux after latest locales update

On Linux Mint Mate 18 (Sarah) A few weeks ago, my locales package was upgraded from 2.23-0ubuntu3 to 2.23-0ubuntu4. After that, my tmux sessions started having issues with utf-8 encoding. Some gsutil rsync commands fail now in tmux, but work fine in a regular terminal. My locale settings are as foll...

Re: What is xfce-autostart-wm.desktop doing in Mate autostart?

I don't know either? Have you added any panel applets? Or other that may be tied to Xfce? If you open the file in your text editor you will see OnlyShowIn=XFCE; Haven't added any panel applets and confirmed with a fresh mate install in a VM that it is still there. Just a little curious but of cours...

What is xfce-autostart-wm.desktop doing in Mate autostart?

Just curious about a file xfce-autostart-wm.desktop that I found in the ~/.config/autostart folder? It seemed weird to see an xfce windows manager for a Mate desktop so just wanted to see if there was some reason this is in here? Thanks!

Conky crashing Mate with Openbox/Compton

Hello, I am currently using Mint Mate 18 with Openbox, and having a strange issue with Conky. Basically, I have conky running with the option "own_window_argb_visual = true" with a value for semi-transparency. It works great with the default window manager (Marco). But I am getting a weird issue wit...

Re: How to figure out why my system freezes (Xfce 17)

Well, 123 C would surely cause your system to freeze, and if it got any worse, it would eventually fry your hardware. Is this a desktop? Laptop? If it's a desktop, have you opened up the case and taken a look? It is an Intel NUC, small-form-factor desktop. The 123 deg is definitely wrong. It has be...

Re: How to figure out why my system freezes (Xfce 17)

I do have the temps showing in my conky, and in all cases, there was hardly any load and CPU temp was steady at around 45 deg, pretty much same as it always has been for the last couple of years. I am not sure why the mobo temp always shows 123 deg. I think there is just no sensor for it. Anyway, he...

How to figure out why my system freezes (Xfce 17)

After two years of pretty much flawless use with my Mint Xfce 17 install, I have recently had 3 crashes in the span of a week. First two times I was on Thunar but today I was using Google Docs and it crashed again (though Thunar was open in the background). In all cases, the mouse and keyboard stopp...

Right-click applications menu

I was wondering if there is a way to get a desktop right-click applications menu like in Mate, similar to Openbox or Xfce? I am enjoying the latest Mate release, but can't seem to find a way to do this. Is this unique to Xfce and the window-managers?
Thanks!

How is Skylake Support with Mint 18?

I am planning to have a new Skylake build sometime in the coming month (Asus Z170 motherboard with i5 processor). Will be using integrated graphics. I was wondering if anyone has installed Mint 18 Beta on new hardware and whether I might anticipate any issues? The last two builds I did with Linux, I...

Re: PPA's: the main security Achilles' heel?

What I always did was after using a PPA, I would disable it in Synaptic, and only once every couple months, re-check them and look for updates and know exactly which packages to look for. Is this a generally safer way to go? My thought was that if a PPA got hacked and some critical system packages g...

Re: What would cause whiskermenu-1.rc to get messed up?

Are you saving session? I.e., menu -> settings -> session and startup . Click to save session on logout. Sheng-Chieh I am not saving session on logout but I have logged out dozens of times in the past couple years. The whisker menu should not lose all its settings. I think what happened was that I ...

What would cause whiskermenu-1.rc to get messed up?

So I had a weird issue where I had to reboot due to some weird video problems that made my GUI crash. After the reboot, my whisker menu settings were completely lost. I went to my latest backup of my home directory to investigate what file changed. It was ~/.config/xfce4/panel/whiskermenu-1.rc Now, ...
