You can't upgrade, you have to reinstall. Follow this howto so that you don't keep losing your /home partition and all it's data.

The root account is disabled by default in this distro, like Ubuntu. The password is the one you setup when you made your user account.

It should be a .iso. At least thats what I downloaded! Strange where did you get it from?

I just clicked the german download mirror link and it clearly says LinuMint-2.0.iso
