Re: HOW-TO: Install LMDE with BTRFS and Snapshots

Thank you for the tip. I have not tried this. I did add Sid sources, upgraded grub to latest (1.99?) and tried again and am now testing 3.4.X with no problems. I think the default grub2 included with LMDE 201204 didn't like the grub probe on compile. I'll keep playing and report back any problems. I...

Re: HOW-TO: Install LMDE with BTRFS and Snapshots

Interesting. By placing /boot into the btrfs volume like suggested in the tutorial, any 'other' kernel I try (want to grab the latest btrfs stuff!), I get a grub error on reboot. Perhaps this is not the ideal install solution for btrfs? On a side not, I've been able to use a fallback snapshot each t...

Re: HOW-TO: Install LMDE with BTRFS and Snapshots

Thanks for this tutorial. I followed it and then tweaked my mount settings in fstab based on a few other recommendations. Interestingly, I borked my grub (and other things) while attempting to use SMXI to install 3.3 liquorix kernel and could not get back into my system at all. I booted from the LMD...

Re: Howto install LMDE with LVM (with or without encryption)

With enrypted LVM, can you install a /home directory that spans across an SSD and a second HDD?

Thinking of using the remainder of an SSD for /home but then letting it span to the second platter... If this is set up, will LVM write to the SSD portion first and then spill into the HDD?

Re: Howto install LMDE with LVM (with or without encryption)

This is a GREAT tutorial but I really wish that the author or a moderator would edit the dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc To instead point to this: grub-install /dev/sdX update-grub I caught it by reading the entire thread but it may cause a new person to urandom a large drive for 3 days only to find it fai...

Re: Gnome-3 Top panel- love or hate?

I run dual 24" monitors and typically run 2 panels anyway. What I do not like is the inability to do anything with the G3 top panel - can't add or subtract from it or customize it like I'm used to with my Mint 11 system. I don't use G3 yet since it doesn't give me any panels when I try to use my dua...

Re: UEFI: Windows 8 will ban Linux running on ARM

Isn't this what Apple does with Macs?
I thought that was why you had to use special Apple bootloaders (bootcamp) to load another, approved OS.
Don't know since I don't have a Mac but the OSx86 guys are always talking about efi.

Re: Nvidia Graphics Drivers - Install Guide

Update! I just changed back to debian testing instead of mint incomming and got two new kernels, 3.0 and 3.1. After reboot to 3.1 i was faced with terminal login(not the blinking cursor only), no GDM, but booting to 3.0 worked. Fix was runnning this as root at terminal (booted 3.1): dpkg-reconfigur...

Re: How To: Partition your Hard Drive.

Great thread. I'm getting ready to redo my HD and I'm like a few others that have grown beyond my partitions. (Tri boot XP, Mint and Os X) I had separated my / and my /home but because Mint installer stuck my "data" directories on that /home partition, I kept them there. I am currently running no sw...

Re: Linux Mint 5 Elyssa officially released!

Awesome! I see what they were saying about 'snappy'... It just rocks on my 5 yr old Acer laptop. Not a single problem so far and I did find one really cool bonus to my system! My Synaptics Touchpad now has one finger scroll if I run my finger along the far right side of the pad! A lot like my XP sys...

Re: mintmenu errors

strange... reload plugins did nothing. I looked in /home/melbo/.config/menus and the applications.menu file was empty. Nice that Mint keeps old files for you when you make a change. I renamed the latest one and I have everything back as it was. I did run sfill on my /home last night to wipe free spa...

Hi. Everything was working fine until this morning. I cannot open System - Preferences - Main Menu to edit. Thanks in advance! Re: Logout and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace problems

Why do you need to shutdown and restart so often? I understand your frustration at something not working. but, I think I last shutdown/restarted the mint laptop I'm typing this from about 2 months ago. I broke the restart habit on ubuntu a year ago. My Mint shutdown is 50-50 on this machine... somet...
