Re: First Time

Might look this over. Would read through the whole thing and the other post I linked to in it. Don't want to reinvent the wheel. Tried to include some good info/tips in what I'd said there and others offer useful info too. Stuff like defragging XP and running dskchk before n after resizing partition...

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

Hopefully that's a good thing ... and all is well for ya. Can definitely say imo, whoever came up with all these idiotic numbers games are NOT a credit to humanity. Death and taxes ... wish they'd all DIE, DIEEEEE, DIEEEEEEE ! :D

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

Sighs ... sleep not allowed atm, have taxes cr&p still to get done and agree with what ya said there. Whatever works for someone is right for them. Was only adding my 2 cents on a good approach for it and making sure it was noted that editing grub.cfg is not advised. Plus there's stuff like this fro...

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

Is actually my fault for skimming, was tired, still tired. Thought you were advising people to directly edit grub.cfg to set default OS/timeout. You were asking which change to make to the file yourself. Actually haven't tried either method you suggested above. Seems like a lot to go through, when s...

Re: linux loses another user forever

Totally agrees with everything ya posted Chris ... Although I can't claim to have directly contributed anything to any of these great software projs, I try to be grateful and appreciate what all these generous opensource devs have done. I try to share what I've learned on the forum of a distro I hap...

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

Good gawd, ya acting like i kicked your dog or something. A bunch of things can work, doesn't make em the right way to do it. Used my method myself, which if you bothered reading that quote from the buntu grub2 wiki is a recommended way and works perfectly. However ... whenever I ( or anything that ...

Re: linux loses another user forever

Actually have to go ahead and dump another pointless 2 cents. Always grates when I see people with the I can't figure it out ... so it obviously doesn't work, must be something wrong with the software attitude. LM12 is the worst thing you've ever seen in your life, yet you're still using it ... thin...

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

No worries, didn't say it didn't. Only that from what I understand, it's a bad idea and discouraged. Just saying can see where people more newish to gnu/nix could mess something up and with most things LM main, believe there are easy gui ways to do it. Thought changes made directly the the grub.cfg ...

Re: How to reduce memory usage?

Only a thought ... might check and see if a control making the screen go out after x, even though you have it set to something else in LM is in your comps bios. DO NOT quote me on that, only a thought. Also don't quote me on this, as again ... is a shot in the dark. Believe there are kernels for hig...

Re: when I plug in headphones, my laptop speakers still play

Something that might be a work around for ya, though isn't ideal ... and/or who knows, may not even work. Or maybe one of the more knowledgeable Mint forum goers will give you a better way. When you want the speakers muted, open terminal type ... alsamixer. Should open alsamixers controls. left/righ...

lol ... thanks Kevin, actually been curious about that for a bit. Thought it was probably booze, but couldn't tell for sure or what kind. Yikes ... looks like you can go ahead and get yourself ( and 24 of your closet friends ) wasted with that monster. :D

Re: How to hide grub and auto boot default??

Nother way to do it, applies to Debian, don't know about LM buntu stuff ... might too. Should work perfectly with anything LM that uses grub2 as the bootloader LINK. Would think in Mint main, there'd be a graphical way to set the default OS and timeout. There was in LM10 anyway. Look around the cont...

Re: "Loaded" Mint 12: Now - No Mint & No Windows

(edit) Had another thought for ya, that would very likely work. See this link If you know anyone with win7, you can have them make a recovery disk for you and use it on your system. W/o having to wait or pay for summin. Also was thinking, might do a google search for stuff like repair windows 7 +fre...

Re: Do you run Linux as your sole operating system?

Nah ... M$ makes me wanna puke, but have been using XP so long, actually pretty fond of it. Still rarely boot it myself anymore and mostly when I do, it's to maintenance it, to keep it running well for my gf. Or transfer files I want over to a shared ntfs partition or summin. She's still more comfor...

Re: screen and keyboard random locking/freezing up. mint11

Just going to offer ya some quick advice. First and foremost ... ya gotta realise (hopefully) how much ground your problem could cover. Re: Openoffice not in menu mint12

Don't have much experience with oo or lo. Libreoffice IS openoffice, only newer. When the people who were supporting openO, dropped it. Folks took the opensource software and turned it into LO, to keep the proj going. Thus why LM12 comes with LO, it's newer, probably better too. Have only ever playe...

Look this link over. For one thing ... To me looks like you're up against basic partitioning probs. That link will give ya some info about it and what I consider to be some good tips or whatever else too. Btw ... silly stuff like this is another reason to dislike M$ and the deals they cut with oem's...

Re: I need a desktop icon for Switch User (Logout)

Really cannot help with this, only curious ... Isn't there already something like that default ? I mean ... has to be a simple gui way to logout on LM11 ? Not sure which display manager it uses, would imagine gdm ( aka: gnome display manager) Have no idea if they put gdm3 in it. Either way can't bel...

Re: Want to Install Mint Side-by-Side with Vista

Look this over link Looked good to me and guy mentions a lot of stuff many how to's don't imo. Things like using M$ own disk utils to resize partitions( in vista, win7-on), defragging the partitions first. I always do boottime defrag, but any defrag is better than none. I also think it's a good idea...

Re: No sound with Mint 11 or Mint 12

Don't quote me on it ... been awhile since I messed with alsamixer. If your headphone jack is working, would think alsamixer is getting along ok with your integrated sound. Try muting the headphones and seeing if the speakers work then. ie: terminal ... type alsamixer. left/right keys to navigate, u...
