Re: error message on software installation

Sounds like you might have gotten a bad download of a package, it happens. You need to find out the exact name of the package that its trying to install and delete it from /var/cache/apt/archives then try installing again.

Re: How much to partition?

For a lot of people, myself included, / and swap are good enough. I will admit to having a media partition that I mount with video's and such. But its not really part of the os.

Re: How I would change LINUX MINT 12 !!!

Do away with the panels altogether, use a dock http://i9.removed/albums/a74/tghc/Mint/Screenshotat2011-11-11083454-1.png So you can use pure Gnome 3 with shell. Docks, MAC wannabe stuff.... H. Gnome has to my knowledge always been the closest to Mac. A doc is functional, and elegant. All the things...

Re: Howto replace all Gnome 3 panels with a dock

I think its possible that you dont have compiz installed. I cant remember now if compiz was already installed or not. I have also simplified the naming in the 2 session files.

Re: My nitpick with Mint's approach

@Kilz: But this is a moot point; You're still not running the Mint Desktop as it was intended, and that is my point in this thread; That instead of working on my desktop, I would like Mint to accomodate us more. I think your coming at this wrong. At least from my understanding of how linux works. I...

Re: My nitpick with Mint's approach

@Aethyr I read this thread and I disagree with you on a few points. The first one is that Gnome 3 isnt the worst piece of code ever that wasn't written by Microsoft, that special honor belongs to the Unity desktop, but Gnome 3 comes in a close second. I also am getting from your posts that you want ...

It sounds like the graphics card may not be enough to run the gnome 3 desktop, have you tried the fallback session?

Re: webcam and cheese and skype

Have you tried lowering the resolution in cheese? I know on my webcam that cheese freezes on the highest setting. Try setting the resolution lower in preferences.

Howto replace all Gnome 3 panels with the AWN dock

Let me start out with a disclaimer. This howto only deals with how to replace the panels in Gnome 3 with the Avant window manager dock. It does not provide every little step on what you should have in that dock, that is up to you as Avant is very configurable. The question some may ask is why replac...

Re: Linux Mint 12 Release Candidate

Thanks for your replies, however I still do not understand the benefits of this change. The improvements in GTK must be very special for the LM team to abandon a product that has taken them past Ubuntu in the Distrowatch chart. But what are these benefits other than Multi Arch. LM 11 was excellent,...

Re: Linux Mint 12 Release Candidate

One question -- I like the menu from the bottom panel -- can this be added/preserved in AWN or Cairo-Dock -- not sure how it's implemented currently, I haven't dug too deep yet. Not sure if its possible, but I do have a standard gnome menu when you click on the mint icon in the dock thanks to alaca...

Re: Linux Mint 12 Release Candidate

the work that Clem and the gang did to put a Mint layer on top of the unworkable Gnome3 but as it stands now this is merely a beta than a RC Err no, this is gnome shell, that is what you get, it doesn't work like gnome 2. All the things you say are missing are no longer there, the mint team are not...

Re: Regarding Mint 9 LTS Isadora

seems you have different opinion for windows in your signature ;) :D :D My opinion on windows is that its poorly designed, and done by a company with no ethics. That they have back stabbed partners and users in the past. Examples of this are to numerous to name but a few are Stacker, Novell and Wor...

Re: Regarding Mint 9 LTS Isadora

The problem with Windows converts (incl me ;) ) is that we cannot understand what has software to do with updating of core system?. This library stuff and porting to new libraries and moving from GTK2 to GTK3 is something that an end user is not concerned. Regarding new software, there are alpha, b...

Re: Regarding Mint 9 LTS Isadora

The issue I see with many Ubuntu based distributions based off of an LTS is that they do not keep up with the official point releases. It would be nice to see a Linux Mint 9.x to be in sync with 10.04.x and release ISO images with updated code. It would be nice to install a system and be somewhat u...

Re: Hello, moved away from Arch

Welcome, I tried arch for about 6 months and feel your pain on the breakages. It happened to me right in the middle of finals week when I could least afford a down computer as all my notes and recordings of some classes were on the laptop. I hope you like Mint as much as I have, its the only os on m...

Have you ran any diagnostic software on the drive? Simply installing software on a drive should not make the bios lock up.

Thanks for the answer gn2, I do have a lot of experience with debian/ubuntu and tend to do the obvious checking like the forums and google for answers. But sometimes its an area I have not delt with and cant find answers easily. I had already done the bios update, cleaned out the computer, and re pa...
