Re: How do i login to my system via terminal live cd?

That's strange :? I chroot a lot and use that syntax. According to the manpage: The bind mount call attaches only (part of) a single filesystem, not possible submounts. The entire file hierarchy including submounts is attached a second place using mount --rbind olddir newdir or shortoption mount -R ...

Re: Accidentally deleted windows 8 from boot, need to restor

aenda, Mint is setup to automount partition so that could be the problem there. There's 112G used in /dev/sda4 so that looks like it would be the win8 installation. In going through your original post again, I picked-up on installing grub to /boot. Normally you would install grub to sda. I don't kno...

Re: Accidentally deleted windows 8 from boot, need to restor

aenda, Open a terminal and escalate privileges with sudo -i or su - if you have setup a root password. Or you can enter sudo before each command. mkdir /media/sda1 mkdir /media/sda2 mkdir /media/sda3 mkdir /media/sda4 mkdir /media/sda5 ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 mount -t vfat /dev/sda2 /media/sda...

Re: How do i login to my system via terminal live cd?

shanepottermi, Open a terminal after booting the live cd, and get root privileges with sudo -i then enter mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ mount -t proc none /mnt/proc mount --rbind /sys /mnt/sys mount --rbind /dev /mnt/dev chroot /mnt /bin/bash source /etc/profile export PS1="\[\033[1;33m\]chroot " The last l...

Re: Accidentally deleted windows 8 from boot, need to restor

aenda, Well it doesn't look like all is lost and, as I suspected, it's EFI. That's a bridge I haven't crossed yet. It's trying to boot windows from /dev/sda2: UUID="7A11-7B8B" TYPE="vfat" Grub also has all these entries for boot options :? menuentry "Windows UEFI bkpbootmgfw.efi" { search --fs-uuid ...

Re: How do i login to my system via terminal live cd?

shanepottermi,

In order to do what you want you would need to 'chroot' to your installation. Then you could run aptitude, apt-get etc.

What you could try first is remounting / in recovery as I think it's mounted ro.

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /
Good luck

aenda,

I don't know if I can be of much help if you have an EFI/GPT partition setup, but can you start with pasting back some info :?:

Code: Select all

sudo blkid

sudo fdisk -l

cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Re: Getting Rid of gksudo

For backing up I have been opening the target disk with gksudo caja. Works fine. The only problem comes when I close the caja window and want to type another command in the terminal. I have no idea about how to get back to the prompt. “q” doesn't work, and neither does “exit.” I expected to have th...

Re: Install LinuxMint 15 keeping existing partitions

1. I understand I have to select Manual for the partitioning and then select /dev/sda3 for the installation making sure /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 are not set to be reformatted. True? Any other trick? Correct. You just want to double-click on /dev/sda3 and set the mount point to '/', and set /dev/sda5...

I'm running LM 14.1 dual booted with Fedora 17 - and have a conflict occuring due I believe because LM14 password and the F17 root passwords are the same! Can I change my LM14 password without reinstalling LM14.1? That wouldn't cause any type of conflict. I have the same root and user passwo...

Re: System froze, grub hangs at 'loading' after hard shutdow

urukrama , I'm going to assume you need to write a new mbr. There's the linux utility ms-sys or if you have a windows cd bootrec.exe /fixmbr I have never had the occasion to use either one of these so I don't really know what the implications will be. There's the possibility that you could lose ever...

jluckey,

I can't speak to the mouse problem, but the resizing, full screen etc. is a function of guest additions. From what I see you removed it :?

Re: System froze, grub hangs at 'loading' after hard shutdow

urukrama,

Did you try running fsck on the partition :?:

The only other thing I can suggest trying, since you can mount the partition from the live cd, is to chroot to your lnde installation and reinstall grub.

Re: Impossible to launch ... as root.

i don't remember having another password for root ?? As a matter of fact I installed Mint 15 (Olivia) to take a look at it and it didn't ask for a root password, but I always set one. I don't understand why mintinstall uses gksu rather than gksudo and the install process doesn't ask to setup the ro...

Re: Please confirm first DD script for image backup

jimwg, I'm not sure if you're going disk to disk or disk to image file, but this is how I image backup my partitions to image files. dd if=/dev/sdb13 | gzip -c > /media/linuxshared/gentoo/gentooroot.img.gz To restore it: gunzip -c /media/linuxshared/gentoo/gentooroot.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sdb13 Also i...

But how would I logout and access the login screen? (in case it happens again) I removed a couple of folders in ~/.cache (dconf and a couple of others) and it worked. Something was borked with mintmenu. You might want to look through this thread (It's not that long) and try restarting the display m...

Yes, I would certainly try that. It also might shed some light on the mate-panel problem.
