Re: Error 5 problem when trying to install either Linux Mint

TECHY 12,

That looks like an input output error which could either be the cd or hd. Are you saying that the cd boots and runs, but errors during the installation to the hd :?:

Re: Toshiba satellite M70 recommendations?

thanks for the replies, I've already got lubuntu via torrent last night and i haven't looked at gen too yet so I'll probably run them on my other laptop first to have look. are either of you using that Toshiba model ? I wasn't recommending gentoo for you. gentoo is not an up-and-running-in-ten-minu...

Re: Password retrieval

I don't think the above will help. The update manager runs under sudo, so the password it asks is the user's own password. Changing root's password, even if they could without knowing their own, wouldn't change the password the update manager uses. That problem sounds a little like this one [url]ht...

Re: Password retrieval

I have just installed Linux Mint Olivia for the first time. When I attempt to activate Update Manager, it asks for my password. Either I cant remember it or something else is wrong because I've tried all the passwords I have used in the past. How can I get round this problem? Open the terminal appl...

Thanks :) You could try the lxde desktop with mint. From apt-cache: lxde ...

Re: Copying Home folder from hard disk while running on live

cwsnyder, I'm able to mount the hard drive containing my corrupted installation and the object USB from the live CD session, and I see all the files I want. When I attempt a copy, I'm informed that I do not have permission. What am I missing? Open a terminal and cd to your installations /home - not...

Re: Mint 13 freezing

antcj, SMART is a little nebulous to say the least. I've read through a lot of SMART documentation and it's difficult to come to a cut-and-dry conclusion about it. However, when I was having obscure errors with a new laptop I checked it with SMART and got errors reported. Dell replaced the drive und...

Re: mplayer and totem fails to play video

ioctlvoid,

That file might be slightly corrupted. I have two videos that I can't make thumbnails for due to some obscure error, but they play fine with mplayer and smplayer. Go figure :?

Re: General strategy for handling user permissions

yes, this is indeed true if I want to install software from a repo. Eclipse 4.3 was not available, I think it's still 3.7 that's in the repo, the same with JDownloader 2 (Beta), TeamSpeak or the android-sdk. I think there is always a case where you just can't install from a repo... There are a coup...

Re: General strategy for handling user permissions

zersaegen,

The best strategy is to install the package from the official repo.

eclipse - Extensible Tool Platform and Java IDE

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install eclipse
Then you won't need to fret over permissions

thanks for the tip: current temp are around 40-50 C° (not higher than that) on both pcs...so apparently i was wrong (50C° is still quite low for the cpu right?); That temperature range looks fine to me, It's similar to my laptop when running lmde so that debunks the suspicions of excessive heat.
