Re: using rsync w/ external /media eats root storage

If the external was not mounted when you ran du then 123G /media/kurt indicates that a backup occurred when the external was not mounted. So essentially the files are residing in the / (root) folder of /media/kurt Make sure you do have a backup on the external and if so just delete the content of /m...

Just out of curiosity can you paste back the results of sudo du -hxd1 /media with the external unplugged.

Re: rsync problems

It appears that rsync can't change the group ownership or create a temp file :?

It might be caused by the names like Calibre Library/Andre Norton/Cat's Eye (1112)

What filesystem is mounted to /mnt/backups/Ullr :?:

Re: LM19.2 Installation dualboot with windows 7, unable to use UNUSABLE free space

As Sir Charles alluded to you already have three primary partitions so you're only allowed one more. So if you want a /home and possibly /swap then you have no choice than to setup an extended partition as the fourth primary. I would use gparted to setup the extended and logical partitions rather th...

Re: Plex & probably a permissions issue

When uhelper=udisks2 mounts a filesystem to /media/$USER it's under the control of Access Control Lists which in an additional layer of permissions that sometimes causes problems. I would try using the procedure I outlined for the user in my previous post or with systemd, the link by altair4 might b...

Re: Plex & probably a permissions issue

I'm not at all familiar with Mac and the HFS+ filesystem, but with Windows the permissions can be manipulated to satisfy permissions.

See if viewtopic.php?f=90&t=225164 is of any help.

Re: linuxmint 19.2 Installation dual boot, unable to use unusable free spce

Legacy bios can only accommodate four primary partitions.

So the fourth has to be an extended partition where you can subsequently create logical partitions within that extended space.

You can install Linux and the additional partitions for /home and swap to logical partitions.

Re: Boot log error: Failed to activate swap

Your swap partition shows as: /dev/sda4: LABEL="swap" UUID="8316069e-1cf8-4ed9-9cdb-6e09f4cb2486" TYPE="ext4 " PARTLABEL="swap" PARTUUID="412c46df-32b2-48b2-95cc-1b0811eae2c0" The partition should show as TYPE="swap" Make sure you didn't store any data there then use gparted to format it as swap. Al...

Re: LuckyBackup rsync: Name or service unknown

Try killing the rsync daemon then check if /var/run/rsyncd.pid exists and if so delete it.

You have a line in the log complaining that rsyncd could not create the pid file because the file already exists.

Re: writing Linux image(img) to sector zero of the USB device)

bill99,

I always use sudo dd if=~/Downloads/linuxmint-19.1-mate-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdh bs=4M status=progress && sync

So I don't understand why your sudo dd if=/media/data/linux.img of=/dev/sdc bs=4M && sync doesn't work :?

Re: Emergency Mode after mounting a partition to /home

A newly formatted filesystem is owned by root unless it's assigned to the user with chown. So I suspect that the owner is root. If you use /media/lene/ it's also under the control of man acl which may allow discretionary access rights. The only way I can tell is to not to use Nemo and if /dev/sda1 i...

Re: Emergency Mode after mounting a partition to /home

I don't know why you would want a /home outside the volume group, but did you set the owner:group of that partition :?:

Try:

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir /media/temp
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/temp
Then paste back ls -lhd /media/*
