Re: Update Manager question about grub

grub-pc is the PC/BIOS version of grub so I'm 99.999% positive that it's installed to the MBR of /dev/sda

Re: how to make a copy of my Linux mint hardrive?

Athough not a GUI, dd might be your best bet

See Cloning an entire hard disk at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dd

Good luck

Re: Mint 19 Cinnamon system crashed after automatic software update

Hello MarcelX,

I moved your topic here for more visibility.

If you can boot the installation media, open a terminal and paste back the rests of sudo blkid

You can access the forum using FF from the live session,

What I'm looking for is the partition your Mint system is installed to.

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

I'm at a loss here so I'm posting information from a striped LVM with legacy disk partitioning hoping it will help you. [bill@gw-tricia] ~ $ sudo blkid /dev/sde1: UUID="5da730a5-6be3-40f9-9e72-997c5ee1eddf" TYPE="ext2" PARTUUID="48f5a030-01" /dev/sde2: UUID="JeC0iu-d3yt-DNZG-dQS7-axnk-fB58-l1rWp5" T...

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

OK, fdisk showing Disklabel type: dos verifies that it's legacy partitioned, however sudo dd if=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1 2>/dev/null|hexdump -C|grep GRUB not returning any results means that grub was never or is no longer installed to the MBR of /dev/sda :? When you mount /dev/mapper/mint--vg-root to...

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

A little confusing here to say the least. You left out fdisk -l /dev/sda from my previous request so if you could provide that it might help. Also include sudo dd if=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1 2>/dev/null|hexdump -C|grep GRUB in order to check if grub is installed to the MBR. Is there a reason why you'...

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

It looks like the live media is booting in EFI mode and, from your attachment, your installed system in legacy mode. Also your boot partition contains drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1.0K Apr 12 2016 efi Try mounting the EFI partition to boot with sudo -i /sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt mount ...

Re: Update from 18.3 to 19.3

It appears that there are some additional hoops to jump through to get to LM 19 from 18.3

I used https://www.tecmint.com/upgrade-to-linux-mint-19/ a few months ago.

Once you get to 19 then you'll easily be able to get to 19.3

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

Open the LUKS container and mount the partitions with sudo -i /sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt # sda5 matches the encrypted partition mount /dev/mapper/mint--vg-root /mnt mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot Then paste back ls -lh /mnt/boot df -h [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "Currently in EFI...

I don't use Caja for such things, but when you select all only the highlighted files/folders are selected to copy so since there are no hidden files highlighted it should not include them.

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

Try rebooting to the live media and starting anew using /mnt as the mountpoint and this chroot procedure sudo -i /sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt # sda5 matches the encrypted partition mount /dev/mapper/mint--vg-root /mnt mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot mount -t proc none /mnt/proc mount --r...

Re: Can't boot to encrypted drive

The procedure you're using mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/test mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/test/boot is incorrect. /sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt # sda5 matches the encrypted partition mount /dev/mapper/mint--vg-root /mnt mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot then continuing with the chroot would be the proper p...
