Re: Using Timeshift to backup /home/user - Bad idea ?

Biggest problem is that when you restore the snapshot you will lose all new documents and all document edits since the date of that snapshot. Timeshift is designed on the premise you'll use something else for data. Options include rsync (in Terminal), Grsync, Back in Time and Lucky Backup. I use rs...

Re: Swap space gone with the wind on 19.2

akstirling, You do have a swap file entry in fstab /swapfile none swap sw 0 0 And you do have a swap partition /dev/sda2: LABEL="SWAP" UUID="699982af-1ba9-4a4c-86dc-f432436b1896" TYPE="swap" PARTUUID="e4b47560-02" If you ls -lh /swapfile you'll list the file. To switch to the partition the fstab ent...

Re: Mount LUKS encrypted device automatically

kwyrky, It was a good move to start a new topic for the udev rule. I've searched my old posts and found some udev related topics from years ago that might be of some help https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=174304&p=898118&hilit=action#p898118 https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php...

Re: unmounting a luks encrypted device

You can see the underlying device with ls -lh /dev/mapper As far as udev rules go I'm real rusty not have done any in a long time. What you might want to try is having udev run a script that opens and mounts the device using blkid to grab the LUKS device, e.g. blkid|grep LUKS|awk '{print $1}'|tr -d ...

Re: Swap space gone with the wind on 19.2

Check grep swap /etc/fstab

The 19 series of Mint switched to a swap file in lieu of a partition.

You will have to change the fstab entry to reference the new swap partition.

Re: unmounting a luks encrypted device

You should unmount the mapper and close the container.

Example:

Code: Select all

sudo /sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdg1 backup
sudo mount /dev/mapper/backup /media/extern/backup
When done

Code: Select all

sudo umount /dev/mapper/backup
sudo cryptsetup luksClose backup

Re: Backing up files to USB drive

I am not seeing a progress display. My simple script is: rsync -r -t -v --progress -s /mnt/storage/canon/t6 /media/uno/Backup where the source is on a mounted hd and the destination is on a mounted sd. The directory is copied *.* but no progress display Add the -i option From the man page -i, --ite...

Re: Backing up files to USB drive

A much better alternative to cp for backups is rsync

As per your example rsync -aviuh --progress --stats --delete-after /source/of/data/ /destination/for/data/

Once you sync the folders only updated files will be transferred to the destination

Re: Missing Start Menu contents on LM 19.2

Hmm. I thought it was the Mate desktop

What does right-clicking/About show for the menu button.

Also what does ls -lh /home/$USER/.config/dconf/user show.

Maybe there is a bug with the Cinnamon menu :?
