Re: radio streaming

I was reading about the subject out of curiosity the other day and what I got was: streaming radio in linux from terminal or from GUI, you have lots of interesting options like you see from this thread. ... I just keep using VLC on everything

Re: After updating nvidia driver I lost mint Logo

Sounds about normal after installing nvidia drivers (fellow nvidia user here). Personally I wouldn't try to fix that, because I don't see it as a problem.. I'm usually doing something else when Mint is booting up, not looking at the screen. I'm sure someone here can help customising your boot sequen...

Re: Replacing xfce 17.3 with new xfce 18.1 on an old computer

If you do the same procedure that you did when installing previously, then the end result will work as the one you have right now. Just tick the format box when doing the installation and your previous Mint goes bye bye. No need to delete partitions with Gparted if you just want the same setup.. alt...

Re: firefox

En oikein ymmärrä, ainakaan täysin, mitä tarkoitat purkuohjelmapaketilla ja latauspaketilla. Jos tarkoituksena siis asentaa puhtaasti foxi uudelleen, niin itse tekisin näin: Menet synaptic-pakettienhallintaan ja sieltä merkitset (sillä vahvimmalla tavalla) firefoxin poistettavaksi. Toteutat muutokse...

Re: Programs that run in the terminal

I guess I meant list of programs like top, cowsay, htop and lynx (what I know) of which first two come with Mint. Rather than lists of commands to do who-knows-what (I'd never run cowsay or lynx), start with a task you're interested in and find the commands that deal with it. I can't imagine what's...

Re: Programs that run in the terminal

Thanks for the reply and link for the manual, xenopeek! I've been looking for a way to learn more about doing things from the command line. It's just been GUI approach for so long for me (windows) and linux has come to the point that when I started using it I wasn't forced to do much otherwise. So I...

Programs that run in the terminal

Reading Mint forums lately I've gotten more and more interested in programs that run in the terminal. Having just seen the classic "cowsay" in a topic (and have to admit checked and surprised that it is installed in mint by default) I have to ask: Is there any easy way to find out what command line ...

Understanding screen tearing

I'm more on the user -, not on the tinkerer, side when it comes to computers. But generally like to understand things... So, what is screen tearing and what causes it. I'm running latest xfce and cinnamon editions. Xfce exhibits some minor tearing when scrolling (firefox and chrome) and varying degr...

Re: Is there any reason to upgrade to 18.1 from 18.0?

I did my upgrade today with the same situation (although I'm multibooting other distros too). No problems during or after. No big differences with my daily use (so far).

To answer your question in my opinion: curiosity and need for the latest and greatest

Current state comforting considering currend trends among OS's

Sorry about cryptic title. Let's hope it it serves as a minor clickbait and we get people's thoughts about the subject. So. I've been using linux (on my own computers) for about six years. When I first got into it I was just happy to have some change to Windows, of which I really have used Xp and 7....

Re: Shutdown from command line

Yeah, I kinda thought the answer was in the line of "debian style policy". Thanks for the info, now I know how if I feel like changing it. I also did some reading on what happens when you shut down a computer, but didn't go down too deep into that rabbit hole. That's mostly the reason I ended my bri...

Shutdown from command line

I use Mint (main edition with cinnamon and xfce and debian with cinnamon) as my main system and one important property to have is timed shutdown if (and when) I fall asleep when the computer is on. I have just been using "shutdown -h mins" under the impression that it's just about the same as going ...

Re: No option for "install alongside other OS" from live DVD

Well I have run Gparted and don't see any more available space really. The tutorial says don't mess with the boot partition and that is the only one listed with an size. I have /dev/sda1 NTFS Toshiba System Volume 1.46gb size 500.07MiB used 999.93MiB unused Flag:diag /dev/sda 2 NTFS SQ004XXXXXX 107...

Re: Install Mint to the secondary slave drive

I have two internal drives. I haven't felt the need to write over windows bootloader, my grub has always been on the other drive. I changed BIOS to boot to that drive and use grub to boot into windows (when I need suberb multimedia :D): never had any problems. And I can always boot into my "windows"...

Re: No option for "install alongside other OS" from live DVD

It seems like you should just learn more about partitioning so you don't have to be scared to mess up your system. Here's a good article/tutorial that should meet your needs: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/dual-boot-windows-7-ubuntu.html I also recommend that general website to all. It has topic...
