Re: Free email

As mentioned, the free email providers aren't free in the sense that there are the hidden costs somewhere. With that in mind I would go with the big boys: Microsoft or Google. You know they'll be around, good compatibility and generally you know what you get. You'll have to judge yourself if the "co...

Re: Hackers uncork experimental Linux-targeting malware

Cannot resist.... https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/password_strength.png This one actually isn't true anymore. https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2014/03/choosing_secure_1.html If you read it carefully, the article just states that, but offers no explanation. As pointed in many of the comments. If ...

Good point!

Maybe if the OP would throw some buzzwords like the router name and Macbook into the title.

Re: Differences Between Mint-Cinnamon and Installing Cinnamon onto Mate

......... Keep in mind: the last install usually controls booting! So if you already have Mate and install Cinnamon, Cinnamon will control the booting, and if you delete it you'll have problems. Solve that in advance by, after installing an experimental linux, boot the linux you want to keep and th...

Re: Differences Between Mint-Cinnamon and Installing Cinnamon onto Mate

Next time you have some time to tinker around, fire up a live-image and Gparted. Make some linux partitions for x number of linux systems in your drives(I have 3 but in practice I use only two, currently: Mint Cinnamon and Xfce). Then when you have, as suggested, played around with interesting ones ...

Re: I hope this didn't go unnoticed?

........ ........ I wonder what would have happened if it was Microsoft Windows ;) I don't wonder what would have happened, because it has and we've seen it. Sometimes the reaction to a bug has been horribly less than ideally communicated and open. But am I the only one that feels weird when this h...

Re: Installition of ISO file

You need to make a bootable disc or a stick from the ISO. It's different from just saving the file ".iso" to a disc or a stick.

Re: Why would I pick MINT?

Why would I pick MINT over Debian or Ubuntu? They're all similar but Mint has some extra tools ('driver manager' and such) that make some obnoxious tasks easier. Some other distros might have the latest-and-greatest versions of software, but the Mint versions will be more tested. Also Mint has the ...

........ Some more questions: 1. where can I get the CODE's list (such as inxi -Fzx)? 2. do I need to install an antivirus? 3. I think I didn't maintain the partitions that I had before. Is it possible to do it now (without compromise anything)? Thank you. 1) There's tons of stuff. Programs like in...

Due to the random nature, I'd say it's a symptom of the same bug that's causing the autologin to fail for many users - myself included. Just a guess though.

Re: which desktop environment should I choose? cinnamon or mate? thanks

Your system seems very capable to me. My resources are less than yours but Cinnamon runs normally (Cinnamon could be said to be the most resource intensive, with KDE relatively same). Live mode won't give you a full picture in the sense that you'll most likely need to use proprietary drivers with Ci...

Re: Linux mint isn't all that good at all

"Ubuntus are harder to use than I mentioned" is a point many will disagree or simply acknowledge as being different in style. What I said earlier: you have a new preference now. So? I was interested in hearing, why post a rant if all you expect is "hatred toward you and terrible replies"?

Re: Linux mint isn't all that good at all

I won't give you the kind of response that you expect, nor do I hate you. I simply don't see the point of your post: you clearly like the "other" linux ecosystem side better than debian based OSs, a preference opposite of mine. So?

Happy earth day!

I'm kind of a weird eco-hippie in some areas of my life, though undoubtedly as bad or worse as the rest in others. Always looking for new things to try and experiment with, possibly to adopt as a norm (tried to look for a sensible way to make my own dish soap and things like that). So in the spirit ...

I don't know about that particular site, but using a google (or other search engine) custom search works when you really want to find something. Many sites actually just use it in their "search boxes". Just type site:thisisthesiteiwanttosearch.com my search word(s) into google. https://www.google.co...

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Toshiba. Well maybe the uefi-era Toshibas aren't any good (I have no experience with one). I have experience with few old style, circa 2009 Toshibas and the bios menus and hardware compatibility with linux has always been great. If anyone has some experience, ...

Re: Is there a way to magnifiy everything?

As I use my computer part time as a multimedia box with my mouse as the remote, I can relate to your problem. In windows 7 I used both on-screen keyboard and the magnifying glass when I needed to (read: was lazy) do something remotely. My Mint (Cinnamon) solution: I have the on-screen keyboard apple...
