Need Technology Career Advice...

As I recently mentioned in this thread , my company is on the path to putting my team and I out to pasture. I won't mention the company by name, but I will say that I have been an inventory auditor for them, and they are now bringing in an outside company which, while a lot slower and not familiar w...

Re: That's it, I'm done. Need advice.

Looks like there's going to be a delay in getting any hardware. My company has brought in an outside company to do the jobs my team and I do, and they are slowly gobbling up sections of our company that we operate in. I'm having to be sent two-ish hours north of where I live now just to have stores ...

Re: Looking for mini PC recommendations

If it were me, given your situation, I would also recommend Shuttle. Google "shuttle xpc" and you'll find small form factor PCs which should take 3.5" and/or 2.5" hard drives, optical drives, etc. About a zillion years ago, I had one which had a passive, convection-powered liquid cooling system. I l...

Re: That's it, I'm done. Need advice.

Last night, it worked, but today TigerDirect is down for the count. Getting nothing but 500 Server Error errors when trying to access their website. Hmmm... I have given more thought to it, and I've decided against building. Honestly, I haven't the budget to build what would be worth the effor...

Re: ZFS and Linux Mint 20

If I recall correctly, btrfs is counter-indicated for SSDs (correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm wondering if that might not also be true for ZFS. Does anyone know about this?

And yes, Ubuntu 19.10 lists ZFS as an option, but I didn't pick it.

Re: Ubuntu 19.10

The article makes it sound as if the improvements were made to Gnome 3.34, not Ubuntu 19.10 per se. Which is fine, but Mint will have to make similar changes to Cinnamon to have the same effect. I haven't installed 19.04, but I have bounced back and forth between 19.10 and 18.04, and I didn't see m...

It's Tricia not Trisha.
So you're saying it's try-see-ah and not trish-uh?
The first part is still pronounced trish, whether you enunciate the i or not is up to you :)
Only for the debter-minded.

Re: Ubuntu 19.10

I'm running it most successfully right now on my 2011 13" i7-based MacBook Pro. For anyone here thinking about running it, if you go to set up an HP printer, my advice would be not to install any additional HP software, except for the printer plug-in if you're using a printer that requires one, and ...

Re: Upcoming "Tricia" release: What are you most looking forward to about 19.3?

I've been a fan of VLC since before it even went to Version 1.0. I used it for the first time on an old iBook G4 (white 14") and honestly I've never looked back. True, the UI could be a bit nicer, but it is without doubt the Swiss Army Knife of video players. I agree with Rootbeer above. Celluloid (...

PREAMBLE RAMBLING: Coming into this holiday season, I've had a few things happen. So, a whole ago, I stopped being able to use the Fitbit Versa Lite that is bought at the end of July. Evidently Fitbit had issues with compatibility with host devices (i.e. the smart phones we use to pair them with) a...

Re: In my Offline Time, I use a Public Library's Digital media

Back when Waldenbooks was still around, I used to go in there and bought a great many Dr. Who episode novelizations. Talk about a jacked-up database. Many books had the word "Editor" as the author name. When they started putting out brand new Dr. Who stories, the first four were: • Timewyrm: Genesis...

As for putting the nut on the wrong way .. do these  mechanics  muppets also pick up the wrong end of a knife, or a soldering iron? Having spent years in engineering, one tends to double-check one's work, or in case of doubt get someone else to check. Ha! Samsung Galaxy Watches... and smart Watches in general...

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 on Amazon, and of course there's a story (I mean, c'mon, when ever isn't there a story?) but I'm also curious how many of the rest of you also have smart watches of whatever description. Portreve's Story: This past July, I bought a Fitbit Versa Lite, got ...

So, I've now been running Ubuntu 19.10 most of the time since I posted this thread. I had some initial issues that made me bounce around, but I learned what I needed to do to overcome a couple issues, and everything is very solid. I have to admit I'm very surprised because I didn't think I would ac...

Re: Debunking folk logic - "you can't prove a negative"

Let's consider a specific situation. I make the claim to catweazel that I don't speak Spanish. You can't really meaningfully prove that, because I can always fake ignorance. On the other hand, I make the claim that I do speak Spanish. You can test that my making me demonstrate that I can function in...

If you snuff it as a result of an incompetent car service person, and therefore we no longer have the benefit of your amazing help guides and witty banter here, the LM community will hunt that person down, tie them naked to a post in the middle of town, cover them in hot tar, force them to use vi in...

Re: GPS Maps can steer you wrong and be very dangerous to your life

For my job, I use Google Navigation five days a week (most weeks) and on the whole, it's great. However, what I have noticed is that sometimes it gives ridiculous routes. For example, it will tell you to exit the interstate at an overpass, then basically do a gigantic u-turn to get back on the Inter...

Well, Pierre , you're always welcome to come stateside and enjoy Thanksgiving and Black Friday with us. And DAMIEN1307 , you're not alone.
