Re: What does LTS really mean? The 5 years question.

It has always been my understanding that only core system stuff and security updates were included for LTS. Typically, I've upgraded to a newer version before the 5 year mark anyhow, so it's not particularly troubling for me.

Re: Win10 Cumulative Updates Saturating ISPs

A friend of mine has a residence in a rural area of Georgia. When the state decided that all schools had to have some form of broadband connection, his area finally got the long-promised, long-awaited DSL service. Except for him. All of his bordering neighbors have it. All the local businesses have ...

Re: Stray Thoughts on the FBI and the iPhone

I'm not sure if I'm more bemused or befuddled when someone these days actually seriously espouses a belief in the "If you have nothing to hide..." mantra. I mean, really? Just about all the tin-foil crap we used to hear about in the 80s and 90s is now laid bare in the public for all to see our vario...

U.S. International AltGr Dead Keys is my default preferred layout. It's a lot like using Mac OS / OS X, but more advanced.

Not as good as Strawberries...

Right, so, I kind of got the inspiration for this indirectly from an overheard customer conversation at work yesterday. Name three things which you feel are not quite as good as strawberries. No cheating, anyone, and no sneaking looking over a fellow user's shoulder as she or he is typing in their a...

No! You're not! :P Okay, so the Yanks do have a bit of an unfair advantage here. Take that back, you can watch American movies. It just has to be the bad ones... like maybe a 15-hour compilation of Jar-Jar Binks or something. That's a bit, um, harsh , don't you think? I think he should also b...

Re: PPA's: the main security Achilles' heel?

In his February monthly news, Clem has expressed concerns about the potential security risk of PPA's: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3007 ... Pjotr : While I understand your concerns and intentions, I'm sad to say I think what you're kind of proposing is — of necessity — a sort of "nanny state" which...

Re: Heads up for Macbook Pro and Mint 18

I have NEVER understood why wireless has been the issue that it has been with Linux on Apple hardware since (maybe there's some odd exception?) the Broadcom hardware they have been using has enjoyed full support for YEARS. They only need to include a few components which are already in their own re...

Re: Happy ANZAC Day!

Wishing all of you a happy ANZAC Day as Australia and New Zealand remember our troops who have fallen and commemorate the sacrifices of all our veterans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Day Freedom isn't free! I had no idea, as an American, what ANZAC Day was until a (now former) Australian gir...

Re: Hello from another Linux convert!

BG405 : I'd also like to add that you should often ask " Why does x work like ..." because in many cases there is more than one way for things to be designed, and Microsoft's way of designing a thing is frequently not the way it (whatever "it" may be) is done in GNU/Linux. You'd do well to get a fe...

Re: Hello from another Linux convert!

A month or so ago, whilst battling with a Linx tablet on which I'd deleted the recovery partition and looking to make a custom recovery medium for it I decided to try downloading Linux Mint, putting it on a USB stick and see if I could get it to boot from that. Welcome to the libre world of Linux M...

Re: Win10 Cumulative Updates Saturating Circuits

I have no Windows. But my adsl is almost impossible 6-10 pm. Because of my distance to the dslam I am connected at 1.5 Mb service, and get 1.4 Mb down during daytime with 350 Kb up. This downspeed drops as low as 13 Kb while the up speed is still 350. Others in our rural area are having similar pro...

Re: When you unplug your router, funny things happen

Not to be confused with the byte bucket. ;) Well yeah, if you're getting bit by bytes of bits that bite, you should put a bit of the bytes in the byte bucket. Though I have known some that just knock the bottom out of 7 bit buckets and stack them on top of an 8th, which'll do in a pinch. Or a bite,...
