Re: Thank God im an IDIOT that protects himself

we've all probably been there a few times. once I wiped out my back up external including all the files. I also did what you did a few times and had to do reinstalls, now when I am not using an arch base rolling release or on my family computers I just do clean installs, even if it's an upgrade from...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

Yeah rolling can make a lot of sense in certain use-cases such as yours. Honestly I'm a bit of a hound for new software myself 'just because' so I always upgrade as soon as a new Mint release is available. Rolling does have its appeal but honestly given my experience I would probably just go back t...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

I still have mint but rarely ever use it anymore, my family does to make it easier on me for issues though. This is my workstation and I need the newer upgrades for a lot of software I use and kernels and since it takes me days to reinstall a rolling release just makes sense to me and why I use it, ...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

yup it's not for everyone, rolling releases are more work and arch base is even more work. Mint is stable and works, which is why I have family on it. Cinnamon is also a community project on manjaro, any time I use a rolling release I make sure I choose a flag ship de instead just because it seems t...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

ya I add some things from aur myself, I like that repository to much, always have. it's like being a kid in a candy store. Remember mate is a community project over there also and since it's basically run by mint (so I take it) it should run better on mint. I do think it might be mate issue with arc...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

I see that Manjaro Linux is based on Arch. - What does Manjaro Linux buy you that isn't in Arch Linux? - Did you install systemd or openrc? - Which display manager did you install (lightdm, sddm, ...)? KDE 5 or Plasma & Framework & Applications, imho is different enough from KDE 4 and that is diffe...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

 all that installing would drive me nuts Well seems you figured out the root issue with mate, that's a start. Mate is a community project over there also, sometimes they are great and alot of times they have one issue or another, depending on who is doing it. Ya I am not a fan of kde myself but...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

yup thats one thing arch does supply, learning linux. I think everyone that has used it has learnt something, there is no real choice in the matter. That's why I don't recommend it to much, if you don't want to dig in to much but want more I just draw them to manjaro instead for rolling releases or ...

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

 Got to hand it to you, you are one determined son of a gun. It's like a love/hate relationship you have going on with Manjaro there. Glad to see you drop mate though, I have a feeling that's what's been giving you all the headaches. Why KDE though ? If you have issues with KDE try xfce, I been...

Re: My appreciation of Mint

for your camera you should be able to use the sd card or the usb to open up your images, also for gimp you can use ufraw plauin to import raw photo images and convert them in gimp http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ you have it in your software manager no need to download it from the link I gave you, it's...

Re: Distro hopping

I had it installed for about 6 years, I used it for about 2 years before my first '5th update', and then left it alone until there were updates to photo handling libs and broke the system again. I have been missing it ever since installing Mint. I am not impressed with the current rollout. I instal...

Re: Distro hopping

Isn't Manjaro a user friendlier version of Arch? Yup it's the one I use, it's a rolling release also and a bit more stable then pure arch but there can be issues also as in all rolling releases. Any rolling release you have to know how to fix the odd bug that rises and what most folks don't do is, ...

Re: Distro hopping

Arch_Enemy give up on arch before it drives you over the deep end  It's a distro not meant for everyone, some folks love it and get it working good (or one of the others that use it as a base) then others can never get it going. I happen to love it and mint and others I know love it but I d...

Re: Linux 2017 – The Road to Hell

this guys a joke ya I had an issue with my realtek card also, kept dropping, so I replaced with an intel one and the problem went away, no big issue, not a linux issue, it's a realtek issue and not supporting linux well enough, kernel 4.11 is suppose to finally fix the realtek issues, we'll see. If ...

Re: Windows Creator Update---ARGH!

why come to linux forum to complain about your windows system? we all pretty much know windows isn't good or at least not for us, that's why we use linux, some just use it for some software they can't run on linux and some like both. but shouldn't you be complaining about windows on a windows forum?...

Re: Distro hopping

There was a guy that made an Arch installer called Evo/Lution that made installing Arch as easy as installing Mint, but the Arch admins and community ganged up on him and he's removed all copies everywhere. He came up with a set of scripts that I used the other day. here is the link for this one: h...
