Re: For a beginner user which one is better: Mate or Cinnamo

I also prefer cinnamon for its more modern underpinnings (and the fact that its based on gnome-shell/mutter and has well integrated compositing, so I don't have to deal with compiz). MATE is a good desktop too, but I too don't like its implementation. I think it was kind of silly for MATE to fork g...

Re: For a beginner user which one is better: Mate or Cinnamo

During installation you have to choose the third option when asked where you want to do the install. I believe the option is "something else". This will allow you to manually choose the partition. As for Cinnamon vs. MATE, I switched to Cinnamon when it first came out. It was very hard for me to le...

Re: What do you not like about Cinnamon?

Another issue is there is no way to customize what shows on the left side of the cinnamon menu. Do you just mean what programs are displayed in the Favourites list in Cinnamon's menu? If so, you can easily do that. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=114557 caribriz Oh cool I didn't ev...

Re: What do you not like about Cinnamon?

The icon scaling on the panel could be better. With the default panel size applications that are pinned to the panel have very blurry icons, so you have to set the panel size to 28 to get sharp icons. The cinnamon menu really needs polish. When text is too long to fit on the menu its simply abruptl...

The latest openshot is great for a simple editor :) Pitivi is nice too, but openshot seems a bit more stable.

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Cinnamon 1.6 is a massive improvement. Its now my preferred environment. Its got the best advantages of gnome 3 and the classic paradigm of gnome 2. Its rock stable and fast too, and has nice effects. I'm amazed at how far cinnamon has come in such a short amount of times, I can't wait to see how mu...

Re: Cinnamon notifications Pidgin

You don't need to disable pidgin's or cinnamon's notifcations completely. Simply go to tools > plugins > libnotify popups > configure and uncheck the boxes for user signs on and user signs off. In my pidgin the only box I have checked is new message, so pidgin only gives notifications when I get an ...

Re: Cinnamon and the slow menu from the stoneage

My laptop has worse specs than yours and it responds instantly for me, even on cold login (i5-3210, 8gb ddr3, 7200rpm hybrid hdd). On my older laptop with intel i5-460m, 4gb ram, 5400rpm hdd it is a bit slow though, but definitely not as slow as you're seeing. The behavior you are seeing seems abnor...

Re: Linux Mint 13 keeps freezing completely (Intel Ivy Bridg

Absolutely no freezing here with mint 14 rc + ivybridge HD4000

mint 13 is based on ubuntu 12.04 which doesn't have good ivybridge support, and afiak freezing is a known issue with 12.04 + ivybridge, so mint 14's newer kernel and drivers will probably fix this issue for people running ivybridge.

Re: Linux Mint 14 RC

Linux mint 14 is bar far the best release of linux mint I have ever used. I had some issues/bugs with cinnamon on mint 13, but on 14 its all rock solid. This release is incredibly stable and bug free. I've just switched all my machines to it. I actually quite like unity and gnome-shell, but I was ge...

Re: en_US UTF-8 not supported

This thread is old but still relevent, I noticed this problem on a fresh mint 14 rc install, this error comes up whenever the initramfs is regenerated. It didn't seem to be causing issues but I looked for a fix anyway. This successfully rids me of the error:

sudo locale-gen --purge --no-archive

Refine default theme and fonts

I've just installed linux mint 14, and love it. But one thing I didn't like was the default theme and fonts. I think if they were refined it would give a better first impression of mint! 1. The window decoration in the default theme has jagged edges. Cinnamon's window manager *does* support properly...

Middle and Right click taps reversed

I have a problem in mint XFCE (debian) where my middle and right click taps are reversed. 2 finger tap should right click, 3 should middle click, but in Linux Mint XFCE 2 finger is middle clicking, and 3 is right clicking. This is what I have in my synaptics config: # Example xorg.conf.d snippet tha...

Re: LMDE 201109 - Important INFO

I don't know why they didn't just make sure to release the ISO's AFTER bringing update pack 3 online (and released it with the new, proper, sources.list). I just saw the blog post advertising the new update pack feature, decided to give LMDE another try, installed it, and of course updated.

Re: Cant install ffmpeg

I had a similar issue. I switched to the "incoming" repos so I could test update pack 3 early, updated, removed the packages that were complaining about dependencies, and then installed them all, including ffmpeg and it seems to work fine now.

Update pack 3 should be hitting latest soon I'd imagine.

Re: Firefox Ugly fonts

Font choices and themes are very personal choices Apart from the long list of complaints about defaults, which anyone can change, there is no reason to go beyond the vendors's application selections, in this case Firefox (mozilla) and the themes or fonts they want to use.. I actually think its quit...
