Ideally clean install, or

Code: Select all

apt install mint-meta-mate
and then switch the desktop environment at the login screen (icon to the right of your user name).
mint-meta-mate? that sounds odd.
I think he wants to go to Cinnamon

True, clean install is best

Re: Custom install

Thanks for your answer. In fact, I reallly wanted Linux Mint as it's well finished, with good graphics and all. Finally, I managed to install it yesterday, simply by putting /home and /usr on a different disk (the EeePC has a card slot, so I took a fast SD card, and splitted it in 2 partitions). Th...

Re: Can I get Linux mint core?

Interesting question. Like Pierre said, you could start with a very minimal headless Debian (server version, no desktop or apps) and build from there. However you are asking about Linux Mint so I am guessing you want the artwork and Mint goodies... but you can't have it both ways as Mint only builds...

Re: Is it possible to get daily summaries via email

Thanks very much sdibaja -- that would work. Do you know how to find the RSS feed for the linuxmint forum? If not, I see that Feedbro has a feature 'find rss feeds in this tab' -- is that how you found the feed for linuxmint forum? I am also aware of the fact that there are other extensions that wi...

Re: Good backup software?

Firstly, I used to just merge my home folder with the backupped home folder on an external HDD. This had its drawbacks: When I removed a file on my computer, this removed file still persisted in the backup. This matters in a few cases: I may manually merge two text files in a larger file, or I may ...

Now unable to use things like Bleachbit (root) as it will not recognise my password. It is a bad idea to run BleachBit as root. is there a way to run Bleachbit in User mode? Clem declared "upstream" when this was reported as a LMDE 3 Beta bug and provided no help. sorry I can't provide a link, the ...

no password was set with the installer. It is a "Mint Thing", I don't understand the logic in it.

Re: Alternative for Timeshift to backup non-OS files and folders?

LuckyBackup has a Restore Task feature that works well.
There is also a facility to keep many Snapshots, but I have never used that... not sure if it works, or how well.

I do use the scheduling a Lot...

Re: Distro Hopping

Distro Hopping is a healthy exercise... well maybe not "hopping" to something else, but testing them out. 1. Installers are highly important. can it co-exist with my daily driver? can I get it up and running without painful tweaking? will it run on the various machines I have, or will have? some ins...

I beg to differ. It is a common problem. Not everyone wants what you do...

Re: Uninstall Linux Mint?

just boot with the Windows 10 USB... plug it in and restart your computer it starts an installer that gives options to format the whole drive or part... just follow the instructions. IF you format and reuse the Linux Partition(s) then it is gone "uninstalled" the process takes hours and your compute...

from my archives in June of this year, compiling a custom ISO with MX: this is about the only instance that I recall that they system was working hard. interesting question
I have a HP z620 dual Xenon 2.20GHZ E5-2660 with 64GB ram

after more than a year running various Linux distros I have the "feeling" that the CPU capabilities are seldom used...nor is the ram.

Re: modular security and counterargument

If I could change that one thing (partition access) with Linux Mint then perhaps I would begin using it again. I'm not sure what exactly you are asking but if you want to detail it in a new thread I'd be happy to tell you how to do it. Whatever you want to do is certainly possible. ;) [solved]

Re: modular security and counterargument

Hello, there has been debate about modular security and is it a good thing or not. I try to list here scenarios so it can be seen where it is a good idea. single-user scenario. A single person uses the machine, performing admin-tasks and so on. true multiuser scenario. Many people use the machine, ...
