Re: Hard drive testing applications for Linux

Mint's "Disks" application offers SMART Data and self tests. Disks should be in the Accessories Menu. Open the Disks program, click on the drive or drives you want to test, then click on the 'gear' icon and select SMART Data & Self-Tests... Hmmmmmmmmmm, I did not know that these functions were in t...

Hard drive testing applications for Linux

Are there any hard drive testing / diagnostic programs capable of checking the integrity of a SSD hard drive
that is running Linux Mint ? No, I don't have (nor want) a MS$ based computer.

Drive is Western Digital SSD in a Dell Optiplex Model 980 small form factor desktop.

Thanks.

Re: How to PERMANENTLY turn off compositng ?

Just do it as I wrote it. That suffices. :) Made NO difference. When I looked at the "enable software compositing windows manager" parameter after doing that and then unchecked the box and rebooted, then after rebooting the box was back to CHECKED status just like before I ran that command !!! Re: How to PERMANENTLY turn off compositng ?

This should do it: sudo apt-get remove compiz-core Thanks for your reply. I notice that certain of the compiz components are listed as being installed in Synaptic (including but not limited to compiz-core). However, I notice that compiz-mate is listed but is NOT installed ? So, should I attempt to ...

How to PERMANENTLY turn off compositing ?

Thanks.

Problem with PIX application

On some (but not all) occasions when I insert a USB drive to copy/import photos off of the USB drive onto my hard drive the PIX program is automatically called / opened BUT some of the function keys (OK), (CANCEL), etc. are either missing or they have lettering missing from them. I can reboot the co...

Re: Mate bottom panel does not always load at startup

Another thought is that apps or scripts added to Startup may try loading at the same time caja and the panel are being loaded. I encountered this, and for that reason I made a special script with a delay to allow Mint to finish loading before execution of xinput modifications, conky, and a couple o...

Why does bottom PANEL occasionally not show up upon booting to Linux Mint 18 Mate

Can anyone tell me the reason that on rare occasions on my Linux Mint Mate 18.3 desktop computer that upon booting there is NO PANEL at the bottom of the screen to be found Note: that I did NOT say that there was something missing from the panel there is NO panel ? Usually, have to fix this by doing...

Re: Mate bottom panel does not always load at startup

I too have this same problem with the panel not loading to occur on random occasions. Any thoughts ? I am wondering if this is a Linux Mint problem or a hardware problem because to the best of my recall even though this happens occasionally on my desktop computer (Dell Optiplex model 980), I don't r...

Re: error on Libre Office calc spreadsheet

Ben: Thanks for the info, I had forgotten about this feature. Apparently, he had turned it back on by accident. I am quite sure that I had turned it off when I turned the spreadsheet over to him. He has to go into the tools section sometimes to change various other parameters and he is one of those ...

error on Libre Office calc spreadsheet

Have a friend who is using Libre Office calc spreadsheet. On some FEW occasions (does not happen 100% of the time) when he fills in some name and address information into the first few cells of the spreadsheet and when he then subsequently goes down to another cell (which has NO formula in it - only...

Latest version of memtest ?

Why is it that if I run memtest that is included with my version of Linux Mint 18.3 mate that I get version 5.01 but if I download and burn the latest version (that I can find) of memtest from the Internet, I get version 4.3.7, which I would think is older than version 5.01 ?

Thanks.

Re: changing red circles to green

it's hard to completely get rid of leftover borders even selecting with fuzzy select tool so in your case here the best option would be to just change the color of everything all at once in gimp > colors > hue-saturation check the R for red and move the HUE slider to 130 and saturation to -20 if yo...

Re: Gimp ?

I would use Color Exchange for this example. You will find it in Color >Map >Color Exchange on the File Menu. The settings I would use are: From Color Red: 1.000 Red threshold: 0.500 Green: 0.000 Green threshold: 0.000 Blue: 0.000 Blue threshold: 0.000 To Color Red: 1.000 Green: 0.500 Blue: 0.000 T...

Re: Gimp ?

I must be missing something because then I attempt to follow those instructions, it just
winds up painting the circle BLACK even though I click on the ORANGE color in what
I assume was the color choice box.

Thanks.

Re: Gimp ?

Maybe it would be better if I showed the image that I am trying to change. I want to change the RED circle to ORANGE but I don't want to get rid of the BLACK lines which divide the target into one inch blocks. What I was trying was the SELECT by color function and then clicking on the RED color of t...

Gimp ?

How do I change a color in the Gimp application.

I have a file that I want to change an area from red to orange color.

I figured out how to select the particular circular area that I want to change from red to orange but
how do I choose the orange color and apply it to that area ?

Thanks.

Re: How are temporary / intrinsic files handled in Linux Mint ?

Temporary files are normally stored in /tmp, and ,similar to Redhat/CentOS which uses tmpwatch, there is a file /etc/init/mounted-tmp.conf that gets run on every /tmp mount (boot). See /etc/init/mounted-tmp.conf for more info. IF temp files are created by an application AND if the application is wr...
