I managed to run the CPU temperature extension in Cinnamon. It displays the temperature of the processor. I hope it will work in Cinnamon 1.1.4 also

Cinnamon 1.1.4 will have the option for disabling hotcorner.

No, gconf-editor is not installed by default in the LM12(but mate conf tool is present).

I think your graphic card does not have 3D acceleration(required by the Gnome Shell and Unity). These are legacy graphics cards, as well as the Geforce FX series, which also does not work in Gnome shell
