Re: [URGENT] When is Linux Mint Stretch/Betsy out?

Not very likely to be named LMDE 3 for the next release, and instead will be come back to true versionless like Tumbleweed, Arch, Gentoo etc. :) That's not happening. I do not understand the Mint versions of LMDE. By definition, a rolling release has no versions. Arch puts out a new ISO every month...

But if it is installed already, you should be able to select which desktop at the login screen.

Re: How to get started with learning how to use Linux?

Every time I open up the Package Manager or Software Manager, or use apt install in the terminal, I'm prompted for my password. This is getting pretty frustrating pretty quickly. How can I make it stop asking me? This is one of the most asked questions on this forum. The overwhelming response you c...

Re: Upgrade manager in Mint vs apt command line

Good point, catweazel. Even though I am using the manager, I install everything so in essence I am doing a dist-upgrade but via GUI rather than CLI.

Re: Creating a new home partition

Why do people opt for these strange partition layouts? Seems pointless if you don't want >4 partitions. Is there any other advantage. According to his original post... ...When I installed Mint, I let it do its own thing and put it all on its own partition within root (except for the swap, of course...

Re: Upgrade manager in Mint vs apt command line

AFAIK sudo apt-get update is safe but I wouldn't use sudo apt-get upgrade or (especially) sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Interesting... I ran sudo apt-get dist-upgrade on Mint for years without issue. For some reason, I started using the manager a few months ago. I guess I will stick with it. I have no...

Re: Terminal backgrond picture

Have you tried a different terminal console program? There are many out there. I personally prefer a solid color, but many people like pictures, transparency, etc. I would think there are other terminals with background pictures.

Re: Mint is not detecting new memory (RAM)

I suggest to remove the 4GB stick of ram and put the 16GB stick in the first slot. Boot up and check. Computers can be finicky with two sticks of different sizes.

Re: Creating a new home partition

So sda2 is an extended partition . BIOS boot computers can only have 4 primary partitions. To get more than 4, create extended and then make as many partitions within it as needed. Cannot see your image (404 error). I have not moved home partition as you request, but I would think you create new par...

Interesting. I just installed kernel 4.11.0-14 today via update manager. I rebooted and the new kernel is active, no need to update grub.

Re: Raspberry Pi

I would recommend Raspbian. It is the most used distro for Pi. It is Debian, which is Mint's grand-parent distro. So if you are familiar with Mint, Debian will be similar (package management, etc.)
