Glad that fixed it. You should be able to use keyboard without any xorg* packages installed. Mouse xorg would be required.

The VM's "hard drive" is just a folder of files. You can put in anywhere you like, even your home directory. Putting it on a secondary internal drive may get better performance.

I would call it a Distro. There are many, many distros based on Ubuntu. Most of those do not change much from the base distro. If you download an installer ISO image from their website rather than the base distro website, it is it's own distro.
